PLEASE, please and THANK YOU, thank you

There are some really lovely, helpful contributors to this forum - more so than other English-language websites [starting with the Moderators] and as such I too like to help the newly arrived, and other people with finding solutions to their problems.

But how I wish they would just have the courtesy to say "please" if they ask for something, or "thank you" when a problem has been solved.

It means so much, and costs so little...............

Yes understandably, but sometimes its also a language barrier with no intentions of hurting anyone. Some of us dont have English as a mother tongue, ok there is also a thank you and please in all languages, but there are very polite descriptions which dont really need a please.

Yes, probably no intention of hurting anyone, but shows that we are dealing with uneducated, self absorbed, vile scum who can apparently ask something in decent english, but are suddenly stopped by a language barrier when it comes to say please...

And saying "I'll be forever in your debt if you you'd be so kind as..." instead of "please" is hardly the debate here...

And what about the highly active rude members? Who would uselessly comment on every post and turn every discussion into a cyber war? Because of those members I am afraid of posting and I am sure there are many who share my feelings. I have been hardly offended by any post without a please but I have been shocked by many comments here and there are only "some" members who do that. I always feel sorry for them, must be stress and problems of real life which turn them so bitter.

OP here :

whereas I totally agree with you, the few nasty contributors on this forum have nothing compared to those on "the other forum". Which is why, having had breathtakingly vitriolic responses to one post, I personally now only contribute to this one, which has far more pleasant contributors. Thank you one and all.

Don't seem to me that you are afraid of anything...

But point taken.

Casuistik, Im sure you must be referring to yourself by being uneducated, self absorbed vile scum.

I commented on the Thread, and I have never asked for any favours as I know my way out in Switzerland. I still repeat that some people dont have English as their mother tongue so apparently there is a language barrier. This has nothing to do with me, for I dont have to ask for help here, as I dont need any. And I still believe that most Expats in here have a language barrier be it German, French, Italian, or English since those are not their Mother tongues. That has nothing to do with me at all. If you love declaring cyber wars to people you dont know, I cant change that, you are just showing us who you are.

Wow! Paranoiac much?

Just mentioning the fact that it didn't make much sense to think people would be able to ask for something in understandable english (I don't see many requests in other languages here) and suddenly being short of words when they just have to add a please (or thank you).

How in the world did that become about you?

Generally agree that please and thankyou are the first words to learn in any language

Since most of us are cunninglinguists a thank you in any language will do.

For those who are liguistically challenged... here is a pic of how to say "ta" in a few languages...

oh...and "You're Welcome for this in advance"... SmileWinkSmileWink

I'm in Switzerland but I'm not Swiss. When I feel like helping, I do so and I don't care if the request for help is preceded by "please" or if I get any "thanks" in return. I'm more interested if the person managed to resolve his problem, to find what he was looking for etc.

Very charitable, such a position should only be applauded.
