PLEASE BE CAREFUL IN CAROUGE

I was mugged and attacked on Saturday night in Carouge around 10pm when i was with a  group of friends, PLEASE PLEASE be careful when walking around Geneva, put your coat under your jacket and do not walk in unlit areas and stay in a group. I cant stress this enough as i never thought this would happen to me.

Kay kay - I'm truly sorry that you had a bad experience - but please be careful in life - not just in Carouge or Geneva.  I'm seeing beggars on the streets of Lausane, morning and night, that I never saw before and I've only been here 2 1/2 years!

Bad (or poor, under priviliged, not necessarily bad) people are everywhere and since Switzerland signed up for Shengen and open borders, it will happen more and more.

If I'm coming home late and it's the difference between a short walk home and a 20 franc taxi ride? I truly believe my life is worth a whole shed more than 20 francs.

Let common sense prevail - and thanks for bringing it to our attention but lets not live in a society of fear.

We still live in the safest, most humane, privileged, country on the planet.

Unfortunately, we may be living in the past.  Switzerland is statistically no longer the safest country in the world.  It would be particularly interesting to isolate Geneva statistically to determine how safe it REALLY is.  It certainly doesn't feel like "Swittzerland" here.

Here is an article regarding this incident -- it was an isolated incident which arose from an argument between two people who knew each other.  This doesn't make it any less tragic or violent, but it is different than, say, a crazed gunman running through a shopping mall shooting people at random.

kay kay - I can't imagine how terrible this was for you.  This may sound like a silly question, but did you report it to the police?  I'm not sure how good your French is, but of you need help filing a report or translating anything, please let me know; I'd be happy to help.
