Parking prohibited: Stationnement interdit des deux côtés

Can anyone confirm the exact meaning of the sign "Stationnement interdit des deux côtés".

At first I just thought it meant no parking on either / both sides of the road (ie No Parking at all). In which case, why the need for des deux côtés since the signs are placed regularly on both sides of the road.

Or does it mean you can only park on one side of the road, so long as there isnt a car parked on the other side (ie, parking on one side, or the other, but not both). If so I'd love to hear theories on how the parking inspectors figure out who was parked there first...

Hi Rachel,

Your interpretation of the sign is quite creative :)

The signs are placed multiple times on both sides just as a reminder.  The sign in the picture is, in fact, a reminder; it has the double arrow pointing up and down, meaning that it is forbidden to park before as well as after the sign.  And there are two arrows to indicate, presumably, the two sides of the road.

In France the same reminder is indicated by the word RAPPEL under the sign (and, in Italy, CONTINUA).

In fact, I think it's no stopping in general.

Not correct. It is a no parking sign.

Here is a link to the CH signs. The no parking sign is about half way down on the left side.

Yesterday I didn`t feel like going into detail as the poster could just use Google translate.

However, I agree with you. I haven`t read all the signs Verbier linked, but "Stationnement interdit des deux côtés" means in my opinion that you are also not allowed to stop even having your engine run stationary. In some streets they allow you to stop for a minute while the engine is running, in this particular case they will fine you for any stopping at all.

It means what it says. No parking either side. Nothing more and nothing less. No mention of stopping so stopping is allowed.

If you stop, you have to stay in the car (or else it is parking). And normally when they have a sign like this it is in areas where there is not enough room for someone to park and someone to drive by. So if someone needs to get by, you will have to move the car, even if you are waiting for someone.
