Some people just can't take the hint, so it's time to put it in black and white.
In glocals forums there's a thanks button.
It can be used by members to indicate that a post is appreciated.
This can be for several reasons.
- The person might agree with your post
- the post may be funny
- the post might be helpful
- it might clarify or expand a point in a relevant way
In a way you can see an asessement of how beneficial your posts are to forum contributors and other interested parties
Now my message is for those who score low in this peer asessement.
If you are not being thanked for your posts, please think before posting.
Some posts are not thanked because they are :
- useless rubbish
- too many posts
- over reactive
- condescending
or worse
A good aim would be to get 50% or higher thanks (ration of , number of posts : number of thanks)
Some people even rate over 100% thanks!
If you're getting under this rate, then think harder
If you're getting way under this, say 20%, then just stop... please stop...

Dunno... Maybe. Sometimes people will end up with a low ratio simply because they tend only to post information-seeking posts. Like 'Anyone know a good dermatologist?' or similar. You won't be 'thanked' much for that but it doesn't mean you are posting rubbish.
Maybe we need a 'Groan' button like EF.. HAs this ever come up with the site admins?

That could be an idea, it would pass the hint on quickly. On facebook they removed the dislike button though, I guess it was over used or mis used.

Sometimes people don’t hit the “thank poster” button but post a message expressing appreciation instead or even send a p.m., in which case the acknowledgement doesn’t show up in the ratings.
Furthermore there are all sorts of reasons why people don’t say “thnks”. Perhaps the post is of interest but no more that; perhaps they’re not in the habit of expressingappreciation; perhaps they don’t want to publicly akcnowledge their endorsement of a certain point of view.
It’s certainly pleasant to know that someone agrees with something you’ve written but I don’t believe that the forums should become a contest to chalk up brownie points.

I agree with Ritchie. I use the "Thank Poster" button to show particular appreciation for the post concerned. If it were to become routinely expected in order to maintain a ratio, an inevitable side effect of which would be that some people would be annoyed if they weren't thanked, then I would opt out altogether.
Anyway: I think that taking the piss (as many of us do) is a much better way of pointing out the pointlessness / misguidedness / blatancy-of-attempt-to-ingratiate-with-the-opposite-sex of posts.

you are right of course, the point is that if you're not getting thanked much then you should probably think before writing something, and some prople obviously don't do this...
the button is also useful for encouraging extreme opinions and rants, which can be quite amusing.

Why on earth should anyone care about their or others thanks ratio? I've never even looked at anyones ratio. In fact, I have no idea where to find it.
Peer assessement? Really? A bit much.

What a load of nonsense
Exactly. I will post whatever i want. If people dont thank me for it then so what? Im not going to stop posting just because my "thanks ratio" is low

Richard, according to your thank rate on this thread, how about changing the topic?

These another reason why you can have a low ratio: you published most of your posts before the thank button was introduced, a few years ago (my case). Your old posts still appear in your total, but the thanks could be gathered only for your newest.
Anyway, Richard, your statistical obession sounds a bit insane to me. As of writing this, your post hasn't been thanked, while those judging that it's nonsense have been thanked 15 times. If you take your logic to its conclusion, you should stop opening threads (but don't worry, since most of us don't agree with you, you're still most welcome to do it)

Richard
Your "Thanks" ratio is about as pointless as basing someone's popularity on how many people are in someone's "Friends Network".
It's not "Peer Assessment" at all. It's about your "friends" noticing you've posted something, them reading it, then deciding on whether or not they agree with you.
The more "friends" you have the more likely you are to get "thanked", but neither are an indication of how popular either you, or your posts are.
BTW - the button to press is the third one along. I'm desparately insecure and need the assessment and subsequent endorsement of my peers.
"NOT!"

You're right - we need a "Mainly Shite" button.
Well, I can confidently foresee this thread going the same way as 'Why so few singles over 40?' and the Oprah racist guff...
By mid September there will be 763 posts (mostly off topic), many squabbles, possibly a couple of dates & the original poster has long since stopped reading ;-)

In other words, par for the course.
Hip, hip . . .
Cheers, R.
I only read Charlie's post in this thread, since he's the only one with 2000 thank-you's.
Everyone with less than 100, please don't post anything in the General and Geneva sections until you get there.

It's sort of the same but more emphatic and much more satisfying to use. It is at its finest and most convincing when spoken with with an Irish or Scottish accent.
Se also: "Shat" and "Shart", which are part of the same family of useful, shit-related words.
