Permit extension while becoming unemployed
As I have been reading throughout this forum, and found a lot of information very helpful I can’t seem to find information comfortably answering my question in the following respect:

I have been here in Switzerland, Geneva, since 1 August 2013. After a contract renewal my current contract will expire on 20 September and will unfortunately not be extended.

I am currently under a L-Permit, which follows the date of my employment as it is valid until 5 October 2014.

Now as I haven’t found a job yet I fear that I have to register myself with the unemployment services here in Switzerland.

However, I was wondering if the end date of my current L permit forms a problem for this. Last time I wanted to renew my L permit I still had an employment contract, while as for now I haven’t and I have to somehow of course report this when applying for a L permit renewal which I am planning to fill in this week with the authorities.

My questions are the following:

If you are unemployed, if and for how long does the L-permit get extended?

The last time I applied for a L-permit renewal, it took 2 months! before i finally received my permit. Meaning that in the meantime, I will be unemployed. Does this form some restrictions as to registering self with the RAV and my entitlement to unemployment benefits?

A friend of mine a few years ago was rejected by both authorities. One said they could not prolong his permit without a job, the other said that without a permit he was not entitled to chomage.

You`d better go and discuss your situation in person with the RAV/immigration office.
