Pet transport...any ideas?

I must be bored today but...

I am trying to arrange getting my cat from the UK. He's got his passport etc and is ready to go. Thing is, I don't want to pay the thousands it costs to have him transported here.

Has anyone done anything like this? I'm just looking for tips and advice. Im considering driving him here via Eurotunnel as I don't like the idea of putting him in the hold of an aircraft - plus by the time I've taken him to Heathrow, got him on the plane etc he will be in his cage for 10+ hours anyway.

Chris:

I'd drive him. He'll probably not enjoy the ride very much, though. I, too, wasn't keen on loading my babies onto a flight in the animal cargo hold, so I made the 1375 km drive. Interesting in many ways - and it produced a few looks (although no numbers) , while I made a stop to water and feed all three in their crates.

What amount do they want to transport him from the UK to GE? Thousands of CHFs? Pounds? - or straight-up, a bar of gold?

L

P.S.: Caroline, that's fightin' words right there :p Even if we are both from DK.

I was very worried about flying my 2 cats from the UK to Geneva as one of them is very timid and doesn't like going out. In the end I didn't have anything to worry about I think they thought it was some kind of great adventure. They were both  obviously happy to come out of the crate once they arrived but they were fine.

Lokum as long as the cats have their pet passport which means they have been vacinated againist rabies it is no problem for them to enter switzerland

We have just imported our dog to Geneva from the UK. We drove and did it all ourselves.

It was fairly straightforward.

Email me if you want any help. Happy to tell you what we did and what it involved.

Thanks for all he comments, really helpful indeed!

The price I got quoted is in GBP so its out of the question. I think I'm going to get myself a big crate, unlike a dog, I cant take him out for a walk during the trip so in a big crate at least I can put food, water and a litter tray as well as bedding.

I'm actually living in France - the cat being a deciding factor on that too. Getting a place in Geneva that was cat friendly was proving to be too much hassle. Out here though at least he has a garden (and the whole of the Saleve to play on!)

By the way Chris, I regularly fly with my dog - not sure what the rules are from UK, but when I fly I can bring "Oda" in the cabin as she weighs below 8kg - small pets are often allowed in the cabin.... (Easy Jet dont accept any animals though)

Ps. how lucky are you a half-wild not very social cat is being offered in the forum now - since half-wild it is probably not french speaking ;-)

Who do you fly with Caroline? I have looked into BA and they don't allow from Heathrow unless you use a pet travel agency.

Oh yeah, and I don't want a half wild cat....scary or what!

When I bring doggie I fly with SAS - they charge around 80CHF for pets under 8kg (incl. bag/cage).

Restrictions on bringing animals into UK are very harsh, I dont know if there are certain rules when flying out, but I assume there shouldnt be...

He has his passport so he's good to go.

Thanks for the info though

I flew with my cat from Reykjavik to Oslo and from Oslo to Geneva, there I took a bus and a tram to get home. Poor thing was quite exhausted but still happy and fine. He had been on planes, trams and an automobile (plus a bus). It was quite a hassle finding the best way, since I couldn´t take him through any airport or on any flight.

If I were you, I would check all airlines, their animal-friendliness varies a lot. I recall that Swiss was quite liberal, there I think you can have him under your seat (best case scenario I'd say). Forget about Easyjet and BA. Check Air France, KLM and Lufthansa. Good luck!

Chris, normally you have to carry it in a transport bag or cage that will fit in front of your seat, for specific measures you should check with whatever airline you go with, it varies :-)

If the cat is very small, you can try fitting him into you inner pocket. ;-) (I know a guy who did that with a puppy dog on a flight).

If you are flying, than it depends if you get to have him in the cabin or have to put him in an animal section (watch out, some airlines say they have an animal section but then they check him as any other lugguage!) If you wont be able to have him in the cabin, I would say a comfortable cage, preferably bolstered (in case he goes with the lugguage, it's very cold down there).

Check for the airlines specifications, they might allow a Migro paper bag or since you are in France maybe even a Carrefour one ;-)
