Why would you get a car that you don't know anything about in the first place? Your post makes me want to say get the cheapest out of the two, you will not know the difference anyway.
Post specs of both engines and the difference in price and we will try to answer.

Diesel Mate.
I have a Range Rover, (similar engine size to the ML) and i fill up at Ferney, In France
The Diesel is Far cheaper then in Geneva Saving you around 20-25 francs every time you fill up.
And yes, Deisel gets you more miles to the Gallon then the Petrol.

It all depends what you want to do with it. With the number of miles you drive, I'd say go for the petrol. It also depends where you get it registered. Registering a Diesel in Vaud is cheaper than it is in Geneva, so the savings on economics are p*ssed away with the higher fees.
Modern diesel (except for the sound) are just as good as petrol engines. The common rail technology improved these engines so much! However - the sound is still that from a tractor. The added value for diesels is to torque at low rev's, but if you are not pulling anything, there is no real point. (I used to have a Touareg V10TDI - can tell you - I took the diesel sounds and would buy it again anyday). Just make a calculation what suits you better, like Catalin said, if it's about the money - just add it all up. But i'd go for the petrol (nothing logical about that - it's just emotional ;-))

it doesnt help ...
First I ordered Petrol thought the same as you guys who were recommending petrol engine ... then talked to one of the guy in Garage ( who repairs the cars for our company people ) and I was told that If I do 15k or more km then I should go for diesel ... also if you want to sell it back it's very difficult to sell the petrol ML350 ( particularly for this type jeep) thus have changed my order to diesel ... also it's written in the top-gear article that I should go for diesel ....
What I also heard that the new Mercedes ML350 BlueTEC model is so quiet
anyway I can see that there are advantages and disadvantages in both ... lets stick to one ...:)
I really appreciate all your useful comments apart from Catalin ....
now I cant change it home I made the right choice :)
thanks a lot
