Photography websites: advice

Hi

I'm an amateur photographer (feels like a grandiose way of putting it) and I would like to be able to put some of my photos online, so that they don't stay forever hidden in my computer and I can share them with people. What is the best way to do this: I do not want to use a sharing "platform" so: flickr, deviantart, googlepics etc. but would like to create a website that has a more personnalised touch. I had started using the iweb application on my mac which is dead easy but then someone said it was a rip-off and too expensive. Bearing in mind that I am completely incapable of building my own website from scratch, what do you recommend? Are there any good templates/hosts out there that would allow me to do what I want? Does this mean paying inevitably? Are some better than others? All advice appreciated!!!

Thanks!!

Hey Emma!

I sent your post to member Extremal and Shadow69, who are both serious photographers, and who might have some advice for you.

Good luck!

Nir

PS - come on, post 1-2 of your pics on this thread, so we see what you can do...(-:

Here is the website of a friend that shows some of his work. I think that it is a standard website that he has customized. Photos are shown in the galleries.

http://www.travelstock.org/

If you are interested, I could give you his email and you could ask for details.

flash web sites (u'd have to purchase, but it's one-time payment):

http://www.flashmint.com/show-category-photography.html

http://www.templatemonster.com/category/art-photography/

this might be helpful as well

Another possibility is to open a Wordpress, or Blogspot, blog and post your photos on a daily basis, or with whatever regularity you like. You can also write comments about them or post more than one photo at a time.

I use both for different blogs - one a photo-blog and the other to do writing - and I find Wordpress more sophisticated, though not necessaruily easier to use.

You can find them here:

http://www.wordpress.com

http://www.blogger.com

and they're both free to use.

And then, down the line a bit, Wordpress is expandable too. So, if you really get into it you can buy your own domain name, load up Wordpress and find a really cool photography website template (there are lots around). You do need to know a bit about website programming to do this, but not a lot.
