Pigeons in Geneva

I need to share with you guys HOW MUCH I HATE THE PIGEONS!!

Paquis is full of them. Not only in the streets but in many many balconies. And nobody seems to be doing anything about it. Al least I have a water gun and whenever they are standing on my balcony, i attack the f*ckers... ¬_¬ Yell

I have declared a war against the old "bird-lady" next door - she is convinced that birds must be fed because else they will diiiiie the pooor things (hellooo that is nature?) - she is spreading bread and bird seeds all around the building - and who is living on the top floor and has the pleasure of those f****** birds (and bird crap) allover my balcony etc..... grrrrrr

Talking sense to the woman = no use, tried the "pigeons carry diseases", bad for the kids in the area, dogs end up eating the moldy bread you throw, risk for foxes, rats etc.... NO SENSE in the old witch....

Complain to regie hasnt gotten rid of the plaque either.... so I am thinking it is WAR - considering to fill her mail box with the bread she is throwing for the birds followed by all the bird crap from my balcony :-)

Any other great ideas hehe?

Boo Cry !  Your old 'bird lady' neighbour is probably just lonely and feeding the birds makes her feel useful and needed.

Instead of declaring war on her, why not join forces and volunteer to take her down to the lake or the park on a Sunday afternoon to feed the birds there, in exchange for not feeding them around your building.

Just a thought..

I have heard about bicarbonate of soda mashed a with bread solving pigeon issues - permanently.

Question is how cruel are you?

If you will pick on lonely old ladies surely making pigeons explode won't bother you...

The old "lonely" lady is married, but hey maybe after that many years of marriage one prefers company of pigeons ;-) (Naaah, they actually both feed them, they litterally walk around with BUCKETS of bird seeds and toss around the building)

And thank you Chelo that was a great advice, I will consider that muahahaha

I heard once that rice kill pigeons.. not sure if its true but if you want help in your war against the old lady I am here and we can try! pigeons really are rats that fly and I don't see people feeding rats......

I absolutely hate pigeons!!! in Brazil we didn't have it but the Portuguese brought them Yell.... now its absolutely forbidden to feed them, in fact the government create proper place for pigeons to put their eggs and they have a mechanism that shakes the eggs so they don't grow and the egg "dies".

I am surprise that a country like Switzerland don't do anything abt it, it really spread lots of diseases and louse!! plus destroys the monuments, England and even Italy are trying to reduce the number of pigeons and here in Geneva nothing on this...

Walking in Eaux Vives its nightmare, there are pigeons everywhere and their shi** too, its discussing, you see bread everywhere and the pigeons are so fat!!! Their noise sound are like psycho knife sound for me...

one day they I was at home and they wouldn't stop making this noise, I hit the window many times but they always came back, I open the window and saw two pigeons doing in my flower vase! and after they left there was an EGG!!!!

of course I could not touch it but my friend didnt hesitate and throw it out the window... one less...

any action against pigeons I am in!

Thanks, CeesK...and WOJA M for reminding me that the torturing and  killing small animals is often the training ground for psychopaths. And scary  how some people openly talk about advocating "war" on a little old lady because she feeds birds.

I did initially  join the "mob", and I will admit that  I am not a vegan.  I  do not  particularly like pigeons, but stepping in their droppings is nothing compared to the amount of dog waste  on the streets and parks of Geneva.  Yell This is a much more serious public health issue than pigeons, however annoying...

When I first moved here years ago, I was really astonished how much dog waste was on the streets!  A German colleague of jokingly  called them "land mines."

I wish the authorities would fine dog owners 100chf, particularly for the able-bodied young who often carry  dogs as fashion accessories....

The Régie is responsible for the maintenance of the building and ensuring that pigeons do not take up residence so, if your complaint has been ignored, I suggest you contact ASLOCA (the tenants' assoxciation).  They will advise what further action you can take and will even provide you with a draft letter in French should you need help with the language. If you also say that you have consulted ASSLOCA, this usually provokes action.

However, if it does not, you could also phone 'GHI' and tell them your sorry tale.  They love this sort of local furore.

Good luck -- and let us know how you get on.  R.

Just before anyone is stupid enough to try any of the daft suggestions on this post, such as bicarbonate of soda, remember:

Being hit by falling pigeon crap hurts a lot less than being hit by a falling pigeon...

You also won't give new meaning to the phrase "Paint the town red" as they don't really explode... well not externally.

So once again just to remind the more radical anti-pigeon activists out there:

While it's annoying to clean the crap off your windscreen, cleaning the dent out of your Porche, cause by a pigeon falling from 200 feet, will cost a lot more than a trip to the carwash.

It's at time like these I am happy to drive a crappy 10 year old Spanish plated Clio, as a dent caused by one of you pigeon murdering psychos could actually push it's value up!

Personally I feel people making comments regarding Bicarbonate of Soda on forums are very irresponsible. Tongue out

On aside note "Wood Pigeon" has a rich game flavour, where as I believe the common pigeon, or "flying rat" variety will at best only make you think of taking up residence in the toilet.

Amazing how much of a stir a pigeon can cause!

...on a separate note I am not interested in torturing or killing pigeons, I would just like to be freed from having them sitting in my windows and allover my balcony as I can clean several times a week and the same day I have crap, feathers, pieces of bread twigs etc allover everything AGAIN....

It is to a high degree a matter of hygiene as well as pigeons carry diseases, and I am not interested in having them as a pet, I like to choose my own pet. However as I am on the top floor they prefer my balcony and windows - not to mention that they all like to sit on the roof, and then were does the s*** land ? Obviously on the balcony just below, yeah!

As I have also seen rats (real ones and not just the flying kind) in the area, I do not think leaving tons of bread outside on the ground is any great idea as that is only an easy way for them to feed = breed!

Complaining through the regie, was not simple as we do not live in the same building and therefor have separate regies, I had to complain to my regie who could then turn towards the regie of the neighbouring building... but yack no luck as of yet - still have the wonderful view of 50 pigeons getting fatter and fatter from the enormous amounts of bird seeds allover the lawn in front of the building....

One common deterrent for pigeons is to place these rows of long plastic pins on the window sills, so they can't 'land' or sit there anymore. So that is a practical suggestion you can make to the regie,

In many cities, feedng pigeons has been forbidden, because it attracts more pigeons and increases the pigeon population. Moreover, the kind of food people often give (such as bread) is very unhealthy for them. It would be like feeding your child McDonald hamburgers. Perhaps you can give this information to the lady feeding the pigeons, although this is not very likely to be very succesful.

In Amsterdam, one good plan was to concentrate the pigeons as much as possible in a few spots by providing good food there, coupled with shaking the eggs that they lay, so as to effectively reduce the population. All these measures are ok with animal protectionists.

The problem is one caused by humans (because we leave or give so much food, certain animals will come), so humane solutions would be appropriate.

One last quote, also attributed to Gandhi:

"The greatness of a nation an its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated"

If anyone would know where I could by these plastic things I would be happy to invest myself!

(the pigeons here get a "nice varied diet" since the woman and her husband are not only feeding them baguette but also bird seeds - I have been picking up and throwing out the baguettes but the bird seeds, not that easy ;-) )

And hey, there are plenty of green areas the pigeons could stick to - I dont invade their space, so please if they could stop invading mine ;-)

Ahhh your naturally biased. We Brits prefer animals´to people.

Mind while I've crapped on by one or two birds, I've been crapped on by far more people, so maybe we aren't biased but just sensible.

@Caroline if you want to get rid of the pigeons from your terrace get a bigger dog - you know something at least cat sized :D.

Alternatively count your blessings, being crapped on by a bird is supposed to be lucky (anyone know why? The only thing I can think of is birds have good fashion sense and just crap on really bad clothing) so just step out on to your terrace and get real lucky.

I am not a big fan of birds in general but understand people affection to them, however I cannot understand why people are referring to pigeons like sweet little animals, do not see anyone doing this to rats...

I dont want to repeat all the time but its not a question of liking them, being cute or not, its health, they transmit disease, louse, they are dirty and make everything dirty, their Sh** can destroy monuments etc.

for people with balcony, pigeons dont like strong light in their direction, I guess it hurt their eyes, so another suggestion is to put mirrors in your windows, or CDs, I guess you must have seen it already...
