Politically neutral in Glocals?! & Global Free Burma Day!
“Please use your liberty to promote ours” - Aung San Suu Kyi

I was going to open a new thread about the possibility of having Glocals endorsed “International Free Burma Day” on the 4th/6th of October joining hundreds of thousands of blggers, forum moderators, web owners all over the world to put on one Banner that underlines the world “Free Burma” to show our community’s support and sympathy for those students, monks, and human rights advocates in Burma who are bitterly fighting the most brutal military regime in the world with merely their bare hands.

I was also going to invite, if interested, as many Glocalers and friends as possible who are also bloggers, facebookers, Flickr users and online forum moderators etc.. to join and experience this arguably the first global scale of Cyber-Activism aiming specifically to bring democracy and human rights to Burma, my neighboring nation, to support people who have lived their life under totalitarian and institutional violence since 1962, to help free Aung San Suu Kyi(many may know that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is a Nobel Peace Laureate representing the 1990’s legally elected government which her party NLD won 392 out of 489 seats but election was annulled by the military regime), and to support the Monks and students in Burma’s recent uprising. This notorious military junta is defined as “Crime against Humanity” for its systematic abuses of human rights by the UN.

Then, I saw several posts advocating Glocals should remind neutral and political free. I wonder if my move would be considered as promoting a political agenda in the community.

I confess completely that this is a political agenda and would love too see Glocals be OFFICIALLY a part of this global campaign for a FREE BURMA at this critical and historical moment.

Last uprising was cracked down in 1988, hundreds of demonstrators were massacred by security forces and total media blockade was the reasons the regime dared to massacre so many innocent people, this shall not happen again!!

I was wondering, what does remain neutral and political free really mean? Or what extra values/qualities does this advocacy bring to this community?

I do not see why Glocals shouldn’t continue to maintain its already grown momentum and a vibrant discussion atmosphere at creating opportunities for members to find voices for new experiences and social concerns in local and global level!

Like any online community, Glocals is able to create important change both in individual values and civic life.

I also like to know how to remain Glocals politically free and if this is practically possible!

As when “we” “presumably” all value freedom of expression, social justice, humanity, value civil engagement and participation; we are political and are more than proud of being political as individuals and community as a whole. Honestly, I would be ashamed to be in a community that remains neutral or shies aways in critical issues like racism, global warming and Burma’s unbearable oppression.

Politics vs. Civic Engagement in Glocals

Of course, Glocals is not a political entity!

However, since when we stop asking NGOs, communities, corporate to be politically/socially responsible and actively response to critical issues facing humanity and the Mother Earth?

Since when social/political issues are exclusively under the arena of politicians and political entities!

Glocals is a dot.com by law; is a community by members’ sense of belonging and interaction. By law, site owner can legally decide which social/political issue to endorse but he/she is risking losing members who disagree with him/her. As a community, by a democratic process, a consensus can be reached via vibrant discussions (for instance if to endorse Global Free Burma Day on 4th and 6th), or even via simple online member survey.

If via a legitimate and open process, a consensus is being agreed, why can’t Glocals endorse a political/social issue as a whole? What harms can this move be?

As an individual member of a voluntary cyber community like Glocals, the ONLY way to ensure your view to be represented is through engagement and participation. Your absence or the concern that your view is not being represented, is not the reason to prevent other members from reaching a community consensus that "some"(no all, not likely to be ALL) participatory and active members decide to endorse, for example, an anti-racism campaign or a Global FREE BURMA Day.

Re: Politically neutral in Glocals?! & Global Free Burma Day!
Post 1
Many members, including I, do share interest in issues such as Burma, environment, sustainable industrial activity, Natural Human Rights (as argued by Locke and Paine), etc.

The issue isn't whether we should debate, learn from each other, make informed decisions, and do the things possible. We do want to debate, learn from...

The issue is whether Glocals.com should officially endorse something? Should Glocals.com claim to be one voice of the community, and represent each and every member?

My answer: No.

The answer should be no because of many reasons. Here are some:

- Every issue demands at least two major themes. The first theme is discovering what is right and with that knowledge setting some measurable goals. The second theme is discovering the how to get there and with that knowledge execute a strategy for change. To illustrate, let us take Burma. Perhaps the first theme is easier to deal with - Burmese government is intentionally and consistently violating the Natural Human Rights of its citizens; Measurable goal: End military rule and witness a free Burma. Consider the second theme now - that is where things get complicated for Glocals.com. Should the world community send a UN army and bomb Burmese military rulers - wouldn't that hurt innocent civilians? Or should the world community place economic and trade sanctions - would that starve more innocent civilians? This becomes complicated for Glocals.com because one group of members may support one path, another group may support something else, yet another group may support something totally different... If Glocals.com endorses one position, what about all the other members who do not agree with that endorsed course?

Burmese example offers a simpler answer to the theme: what is right. However, many many other political, religious, behavorial, ethical, etc. themes do not have simple answers to the fundamental and primal question: what is right.

- An official endorsement from Glocals.com is dangerous for another reason. It could encourage folks to leave Glocals.com because they disagree with the endorsed position. There is a chance that only those would remain who think the same, talk the same, and follow the cliquish party line. Glocals and every community is better off with folks who disagree and offer new facts, who offer constructive and alternate view points. Challenging, thought provoking, unusual and mysterious people are beautiful and precious. Glocals should try to attract them to participate, enrich and have fun. Let a thousand different flowers bloom.

- An official endorsement from Glocals.com would demand even more work from Nir and Oded. That could mean that they will spend even less time with their girlfriends! More face-waxing-like incident posts about how badly it hurt! :-)

Does all this mean that Glocals.com can not contribute and enrich the lives of folks interested in Burma or whatever?

Glocals can contribute and should contribute. One way for Glocals to contribute is to encourage folks like you organize and post events that invites other members to debate and coordinate whatever you all want to. Another is to coordinate off-line email discussions or chats through Glocals.com; there may be others.

Ultimately this decision depends on those who own and run this web site (Nir and Oded). Glocals is more likely to make a lasting impact if it remains neutral yet a feature-rich means, rather than if it takes a bias and pursues an end.

Wayne, it is hard to limit ourselves only to intellectually ideological and neutral paradigms while being explanatory or debating smthng like the issue you raised. emotions will come along, so will the changing environment of debate. escalation/intensification & expressions of converging views will entail more than just a strong argumentation.

if Glocals is registered as grassroots "pushy" NGO/non-for-profit lobbyist, perhaps your point could be taken up & analysed diligently. otherwise, i would concur with colorado's locanism of "no" , this won't serve us a suitable forum to address & debate that issue.

i wish your good being a moral patience,* your actions to emerge as prompt & worthwhile.

Thanks Wayne. You raise a good point that Oded and I often talk about: should glocals take an 'official' stand on some political issues.

My personal opinion, and we're still listening close to what members are saying on this and learning, is 'no'. For 3 reasons:

1. glocals.com mission and reason for being is to enable friendly people to meet other friendly people, not to make political statements.
If members want to make individual statements, that's cool. But making official glocals statements is not our mission.

2. Making ANY official political statements on glocals.com, even if it's on what may seem like 'no brainer' political issues, is likely to alianate some members.

3. It's impossible to decide which issues glocals should support, and which it should not. Who should decide - Oded and I? The majority of members? ALL members?

Would love to hear your thoghts.

To 'offically 'take political stances would be a whole other kettle of fish than continuing to host valuable platform for varied debate. Crikey, just when we had gotten over the sheep...

We are all free to pick other networks, websites, groups, parties, unions.... join demos.... And to encite each other to support. But why should Glocals need to/have to jeopardise 'neutrality' and endorse them?
Glocals already provides a forum for discussion, debate, sharing...And this site has been instrumental in putting people in touch with others, and raising awareness of all kinds of initiatives and thoughts that people can take or leave. And through respectful communication we are fairly self-governing.
You want to have policy-makers too, defining what is worthy of Glocals official support? And bodies to decide how to deal with 'offenders', perceived at not toing the Glocal Party Line??! Or explain why some intiatives didn't receive any support?

I am not saying that entire countries (like Switzerland) should necessarily benefit from that same option to be neutral. And I don't think that companies should have a choice about being socially responsible. But Glocals is socially responsible. Don't confuse that with political!

I think you raise great points as food for thought, Wayne. However, ultimately I don't see the point in jeopardising a community spirit (that I do find IS farily socially conscious and active) by officially endorsing some, and not other, political movements.
The potential to aliente 'non-believers', or those that don't like the tone of the discussions around issues, is huge, I believe.

Let us as individual Glocalers vote with our words and actions and let Glocals as an entity stay 'officially' out of it!
We can keep our liberty and promote that of others whilst remaining politically free, in any 'official' sense. I completely believe WE CAN!

Debating no-brainers is boring. And the debatable stuff has potential to be divisive.

As you said, Glocals.com is not about making political statements. Is about friendly people meeting other friendly people. So why even contemplate deviating from this mission?
You think friendly people can't have radically opposing political / religious / ... opinions?

We would spend all our time debating what is worth of debate/support/endorsement................ and causing offence to each other

...who, on planet earth, could be against showing some compassion for local comunities oppressed by a military junt ?

I do get all your points above, but, to me, putting a banner supporting the Burman population is not much more political than having a World AIDS Day banner, or giving funds to the World Food Programme. Send me the guy who pretends that killing pacifist monks demonstrating in the streets is good, and I'll deal with the banter until he changes his mind ;-)

Hi Hobbes.

One of the probs is that there is just no end to the good causes we can support.

Monks being murdered in Burma, Executions in China, Genocide in Darfur, Human rights violations in Israel, The war in Iraq, Iran's attempt at getting the bomb, Child prostituion in certain countries, Political arrests in Russia...

All of the above are worthy causes, and this is just a tiny, tiny list.

Rather than officially endorsing some issues, while ignoring or forgetting others, we provide a platform where people can organize their own activities and support the causes they feel are worthy.

What think?

Oded

I do understand your point of view and truly respect it. Mine is "better one drop less in the ocean of suffering, than considering that draining it is impossible and not moving".

I'll be there, and so will many of my friends.

Thks for highlighting the activity btw ;-)

perhaps Glocals.com should consider allowing members to pool funds and buy banner ads. The banners could embed links that take interested visitor to sites with more information. Television networks, newspapers, and other media earn a part of their revenue from such ads and banners.

The banner ads do not mean that Glocals.com or its management endorses something, or that every member of Glocals supports the advertised views.

Benefits:

- Revenue for Glocals.

- An opportunity for motivated folks to get Glocals.com members to learn about their causes.

Just wanted to get more people on that little island dressing red, holding roses and banners in the City of Human Rights where we should be proudly living up its reputation.

Thankful to fellows who are coming…Glocalers might be one of the biggest groups
Thankful to fellows who are not able to come said their spirits are with us, some said will wear RED to show solidarity..
Thankful to have this activity highlighted!

There are certainly many worth fighting causes in this world. They need not necessarily to compete for media attention, resources, and/or a space in a homepage. We need not to be overwhelmed by so many causes that some people are virtually convinced that nothing is going to change…no need to do anything…

The biggest challenge has never been too many causes that we do not know how to react, how to prioritize, which one to support, thinking there is no end to all these causes… but on how to get more people/friends out there, to be concerning, to be passionate about change. Changing one or two causes happen to touch our heart/soul that we are willing to devote some time/resource on it while in the journey of making change; it ultimately changes both the people and the world.

I believe debating all these causes would only unite us rather than separate us; would only increase our sense of belonging to this community not alienate from it. Why? Since via these debates and communications, we learn, we change and we all are closer to the near truth not away from it, we all are closer to the near virtue not further from it.

Truth and virtue gather people not disperse them apart…

From a historical point of view, human civilization has never enjoyed more consensus than division, we have more common values to unite us then to divide us, we’ve realized that we all learn from similar historical experiences and mistakes and we are sharing a common future...

Tomorrow is going to be a great international day for Burma! A free Burma! I seem to sense its coming, experiencing from what happened in my other neighbor East Timor in 1999….Similar international pressure, similar world wide campaign in different cities, similar strong consensus in the international society. Plus, presumably, no wise leaders would want to ruin an Olympics for an immoral military junta

Can not wait to see Burma becoming a democracy after near 5 decades totalitarian;
Can not wait to see Daw Aung San Suu Ki to become President she was long elected from a Prisoner of Conscience of the Nation…
Can not wait to see another legendary story of Nelson Mandela alike in human history..
Can not wait to visit a free Burma… a beautiful ancient country, full of cultures and culturally divers people….

But will wait, wait push, for this day’s coming and then proudly say…”some friends and I in the city of Human Rights made a tiny support for this wonderful day to come….a bit earlier…

? demain

Can not wait to see Burma becoming a democracy after near 5 decades totalitarian;

I thought that your request was for Glocals not to remain neutral, but to 'officially' endorse (as opposed to facilitate support of, through memebers' actions/words) certain causes? This is what I opposed. As I don't see what it has to do with 'enabling friendly people to meet other friendly people'. It would change the purpose of the site. And there are many other sites out there officially endorsing causes, how many are there helping friendly people connect with others, by town (in Geneva), that aren't dating ones?

Nobody said anything about Glocals not being there to debate causes - we do! all kinds of issues are debated, and many Glocals are supporting the cause in various ways, including attending the rally that was highlighted as an activity on Glocals, and that Glocals posted on Facebook...

What did you not achieve through glocals, as it stands today, that you wanted to?
Sorry for the direct questioning but I think I may have gotten lost in your looooooooong posts. [nothing against them! - don't want to debate how or what you post!]
