Thanks for any suggestion.

I have not read through the links above but normally your household insurance takes care of this but it is limited. I have paid a premiium to have a moutain liability insurance added

If you want an independent quote - a good place to start is
http://en.comparis.ch/hausrat-versicherung/default.aspx
It may be that Mathias-I-am-only-on-glocals-to-flog-insurance-Hug can do you a good deal, but it would make sense to check out the market first.
You'll quite often get a good deal if you take out your Home Contents Insurance (NOT obligatory) with the same company as your RC ("Private Liability") insurance.
Good luck
(Personally, I'd love to be called Carolyn Hug - what a cool name!!)

Thank you, I just read the link...
These two bits:
1) When we moved here everything like this was organised through a relocation service and this insurance wasn't mentioned as a suggestion but as an absolute necessity.
2)Be careful - this is one of the most (over) insured countries in the world, select only insurance that makes real sense to you (weigh up the risks and the rewards and decide whether you can afford to pay something yourself if you break it), otherwise you might end up like many Swiss - totally over insured.
make me wonder now…
Is the private liability insurance compulsory (I mean, required by law)? Or not?

I agree 100% with Carolyn and comparis.ch is a very good website. Also, as she said when you ask for a quote ask different companies and compare apple to apple. As I often say there are not really bad insurance companies in Switzerland just bad advisors.
To answer the question to know if liability insurance is required by law or not:
- Regarding your personal liability it is NOT required by law. The article 41 of the Civil Code just stay that what you break you have to pay (in a nutshell)
http://www.admin.ch/ch/f/rs/220/a41.html . Its is only compulsory in particular cases (hunting for example). Nevertheless, most real estate agencies are asking for a liability insurance in order to insure the owners and simply to lower your bill when it is time to leave and you have to give your apartment in the same conditions then you got it.
- Regarding your car: it is required by law and you will not get your plates anyway without a liability attestation delivered by your insurance company.
