Problem with my notebook - Please help

Hello my dear Glocals members,

I am have a technical problem with my computer, a Compaq Presario CQ 61, whose screen doesnt  work properly and goes black very often. The rest of the computer seems to be alright, so I guess it is just that.

Would anyobdy be ready to help me and join me for a coffee somewhere in Geneva? If you like, I could even offer you an introduction course into the beautiful German language in return. :)

Have a lovely day and thanks for your replies ;)

try and connect the laptop to an external screen via the connection on the back of the pc. if the problem no longer exits it most likely is the connection cable between the laptop and the fold up screen. if not, it may be a fault with the pc itself. ( cpu or video circuit, like a faulty transistor ). this would mean, you need to buy a new laptop. fixing the problem, would cost more than a new notebook pc.

quote from google search about your presario.

quote:

Terrible mistake

  By Felix - Oct 12, 2010 - Newegg.com

Pros: Cost - size - features are all nice in theory.Cons: To put it plainly. Literally within the day after the return period was up with Newegg the screen began to flicker. Now less than 2 months of ownership the video card has died. The PC will boot up but the screen remains blank. It turns on, you can see the darkness is lit and not dead but absolutely no image is seen.I knew going in this was a REFURBISHED model and I read the reviews on newegg giving it positive marks. It is what lead to make the choice of buying and now I wish I had listened to my conscience and bought new. Also, this is my SECOND HP product that has had video card problems crapping out on me.

first thoughts on this problem....

1) does the blacked out screen become active again when you hit "Enter" or "Space bar". If so, its going into battery save mode (this also depends if your laptop is connected to power supply or not)

2) It could be a display driver problem. typically every laptop (when you buy new) comes with a driver CD. You can try installing the display driver again.

3) sometimes it could also be the case that the screen blacks out when using specific applications. you can keep a watch on this. if you find that the specific application causes blackout everytime, either re-install or remove the application. for e.g. my laptop screen freezes sometimes when I watch youtube due to the adobe flash player.

Epicure's idea is very good, I had the same trouble as you with mine. The external display was still working, but the integrated screen turned off (still displaying but no back light so it seemed off). I fixed to problem for a while with some tape, I'm not kidding ! But beeing shaked on the motorbike didn't help and it finally and definitevely broke the thin wires between the body and the screen. It was old enough to be changed without tears.

So, is the external display still works even if the embeded screen turns black ?

Dear Glocals member,

thank you very much for all your replies. I also think that Epicure's description was very close to the problem I'm having. Now, two days after the problem started, the screen doesn't work at all anymore, which means that whenever I switch on the computer the screen remains black and doesnt react at all, no matter what I try. A hardware problem or a simple connection problem between the display and the rest of the computer, I dont know. I will have to have it repaired soon, no computer, no fun ;-)

Thank you all again. Your replies helped me a lot to understand what might be actually going on with my little friend.

Have a lovely day ;-)

Do you have your pc on external screen or beamer mode?? just try switching that see if it comes back online.
