Questions about removal next week - help!

Hi there,

Our household goods will be shipped over a week tomorrow and I have a few questions which I'd love answering please.

We're using a local removal company in the UK who have never done a run to Switzerland before (only EU countries) so I want to make sure they have as much, and the correct, info as possible.

 - Do we need to let the relevant customs office know that are shipment will be arriving at an approximate time on a given date?

- We've filled out the 18.44 form but have a few ew things to declare totalling around £1200. Should we list these separately somewhere? Will the duty need paying on the spot at the border or will the customs office send us a bill to our Swiss address to be paid afterwards?

 - I'm expecting to pay 7.6% VAT plus an additional payment based on weight. How much is the additional payment?

 - We've got a small amount of alcohol - 50 cans of guinness, 50 bitter and 50 cider. I've read there's an alcohol declaration form but I can't find this anywhere. Any ideas?

- Is there any issue with dried food and cans/tins of food? We've stocked up on baked beans and a few other bits!

 - Someone mentioned that you need a cusoms agent to handle things. Is this correct and if so is this person just a Swiss official or an external who is paid for helping to facilitate the border crossing?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Kevin,

I recently brought all of my things over from the UK in a massive van, although I drove it myself. When I arrived at the Swiss border (the one near Bescancon), I was stopped. He asked me if I had anything to declare and I said no. Then he asked for me to open the rear doors at which point he saw all my stuff and then made a few checks on my passport etc and let me go, without paying a bean. I

One thing he did ask me was if I had made a list. I believe this was so that they didn't need to completely unload my van on to the road to see what I had.

I'm aware that if the possessions belong to you then you dont need to pay duty. It's only on brand new boxed stuff that you would be liable. I presume this is the £1200 that you're talking about. Generally for new goods you will need a list, plus the receipts for each item. I think that should be sufficient. Regarding the drink, I think if you don't have the original receipts they may make an estimate. There's no issue with dried or canned food. I regularly drive to Carrefour in France expressly to buy these things.

I'm not sure that you need to pay on weight. I thought that was only for importing cars. 7.6% VAT yes, but not weight.

Regarding giving them a date, - no. They're there all the time, you turn up and deal with them. Sometimes they don't even stop you, although a large removal van will most likely be stopped.

Anyway, hope that kinda helps. Good luck with your move.

Andy
