My husband and I are in the process of looking for a new place to live and already have RC insurance (the AXA Winterthur, BOX Basic package). One of the places that we are applying to asks about menage insurance, in addition to RC insurance. Can any one tell me what is the difference between these and do we really need them both?

Assurance ménage also includes insurance for theft (stolen objects, damage to glass and doors, etc.). Is the place furnished? If yes, that's why the owner is asking for a higher coverage than the RC.
AFAIK, only the RC is mandatory; however it's always a good idea to be full covered.

RC is for any damage you cause to a thirp party. Household insurance protects your belongings. It looks like you already have household insurance (BOX).
