A very good question, that I've asked myself too. Pushing this thread a bit, hoping for an answer! :)

The answer to the question is "Yes" - but I'm not sure what other information you're looking for - if you can elaborate on that, I may be able to help!!  i.e. what comments are you looking for - why did you post the post - are you having problems - etc etc :-)

Well, I'm thinking of getting one, instead of an ADSL line, as it seems cheaper to me...

Does it work for:
Skype?
Web-radio?
Downloading pictures or videos, such as e.g. youtube?

I'm not a heavy internet user, basic things usually, but here and there a bigger email...

Have you experienced any problems, such as bad network or availability? Would you chose it again?

Well, any experience you have is valuable!

Thanks for your answer!

Hello All
I use USB internet from Orange....and it has been like more than 6 months...
My overall experience is Average...
You can use skype, web-radio ...but with You-tube it is always bit slow..... For normal browsing I should say this is the best and the cheapest option available...but u have to be be sure that you get a good signal at your residence....so just confirm from orange before buying....
Just to conclude{very good option}: For normal browsing and good for Skype (video chat as well) and all{just fine}: for watching online videos and all
I hope my comments can be bit helpful to you...
RegardsSaurabh

I've just moved into a new apartment (finally). I didn't want to wait for adsl set up.

I read up about other people's experiences ... there's thread on Glocals somewhere ... many people had problems with Orange coverage and also service (French only and not good response and office hours only I think not sure of this last one).

I had flatmates in my previous apartment and one of them had orange mobile internet on his iPhone. He had coverage problems and was not happy.

2 days ago I went for Swisscom mobile Internet - unlimited flat (rate). Price:

CHF 1 (yes one) for the USB stick + CHF40 for the sim card & then CHF 59/month for a 2 year contract.

If you go for a 12 month contract (unlimited usage) the USB is CHF 120.

They have other packages for occasional users where you pay a small amount monthly plus CHF 4.50/day (for the days you use it) but it has data limits etc. I just couldn't see how any of them was worth getting. One or two full sized Youtube vids and you blow past most limits (probably).

So far, speed is good. Videos (if not full screen high definition) play well. Connection is quick and so far there has been no signal loss unlike my friend's experience on his iPhone.

I have not taken it out of the apartment yet but will try it at Starbucks (Rive) this weekend and hopefully will not have to get those Starbucks 30-minute cards again.

I hope this helps.

Oh by the way, if you get the Swisscom package from a Swisscom shop (not from Mobilezone etc) you get 14 days money back period so if it doesn't work you can cancel the contract. I wouldn't have risked it otherwise.

I've been using one for the past few weeks, as I moved and didn't want to wait for a fixed one.
It works fine, but is surely not as fast as the non-mobile web connections. However, when using it, you have regular web access, incl access to Skype and any other application.
The speed also largely depends on where you are. Most suppliers can tell you if they have strong mobile coverage around where you live.
Last, glocals members get a free mobile internet with Orange, when you get a new mobile contract. Details here: http://www.glocals.com/orange-offer/

The Orange offer  is available contract only:

http://www1.orange.ch/residential_internet_on-the-go_internet-everywhere.html

Swisscom's offer does have a pre pay option:

http://www.swisscom.ch/res/internet/mobilessurfen/mobile-unlimited/tarife/index.htm

As a non-resident, Swisscom has the best solution, however expensive at the moment.

Thanks for all the replies!

I went in to Oranges shop the other day and let them check my new address. And it turned out that exactly on top of my flat the network is not perfect (the neigbouring flats are ok.....) :((

Is theree by any chance anyone who would fancy borrowing me a orange stick for a few hours to try it? I pay in beers :)

I've got a Sunrise 3G USB modem that I've been using at my sole internet connection at home for the last year. It costs me 50CHF per month for the unlimited plan. According to the bill I end up using about 8GB per month.

What's good:

- it works! download speed can be reasonably good (up to 250KB/s although 100KB/s is more normal)

- it's very, very convenient: I can check my emails and blogs on the tram on the way in to work

- web radio (BBC Radio) works well. YouTube is OK but not brilliant

What's not so good:

- connection speed varies with time of day. Most of the time it's OK/good, but in the evenings where I live it can be tempramental.

- Skype doesn't work so well: I get a lot of dropped packets and broken audio.

I live on the fifth floor in a large residential area and luckily have not had problems with coverage.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Tebasile:

You can buy an Orange Stick, and if you don't like the speed, you can give it back within 7 days and get all your money back...Just check with the Orange store before hand to make sure what I say is 100% correct...(-:

thanks Nir!

I asked for sunrise, and they said "maybe" you can give it back... Undecided I'll ask Orange and take the one with the testing-option!
