DO NOT GO FOR ORANGE! i did sign up 2 years contract with orange with the USB stick for surfing without limits and ended up receiving a bill for 1.000 franks, and within another month another bill for 600 franks! be careful before you sign the contract with Orange as it is impossible to terminate it or otherwise you pay a fine for 500 franks.

I think the best coverage is with Swisscom!

When you say be careful when u sign a contract, I remember my sunrise connection, I wanted to get bluewin but unfortunately I cant because I cant cancel my contract with sunrise, it was only 12 month contract and they renew it every year without asking u, if u phone then they will say u just need to pay them or write them letter just before 2 months prior to the ending period otherwise they will renew it again and then u have to wait another 12 month, I hate this ridiculous policy. Very bad law and order I guess no body here to ask them. This is the moment I miss UK admin system, they are so reliable and trustworthy. And they use some commence sense that you can cancel at any time after the contract ending period you just need to inform then normally in one month advance which make more sense

Contracts - ja_nixon's description is basically the normal swiss phone contract. It is quite important to read them, and, pay close attention to how to cancel them. Write it in your agenda.

I have no idea if it would work, but, it is a contract. You can ask for a different contract to sign, say, one that has one month cancel period after the initial period. My guess? They would ignore you.

In terms of fees and data transfer. All 3 companies say unlimited with a *. Basically you can transfer somewhere between 5 and 10GB/month. Beyond that they either charge you and/or slow down the connection.

Roaming. Geneva is bad for this because we are so close to the French border. In fact, there are a lot of places along La Cote where you get a better signal from the French side across the lake then from the Swiss side. Roaming fees are very very high for data. You really want to be obsessive about which network you are using while connected. Or, pay extra so that roaming isn't so expensive.

Both Orange and Swisscom have their 3G maps on line. If you think you will use the connection mostly from one area, look at how good the 3G coverage is.

Swisscom is http://www.swisscom.ch/res/internet/mobile-unlimited/index.htm

Orange is http://www1.orange.ch/residential_support_coverage_swiss-coverage.html

In both cases look either for HSPA (swisscom) or HSDPA (Orange) on the map.

Finally, I have the swisscom one. The Windows software sucks at a level such that windows actually starts looking good.

As long as I don't use mine with Windows it works very well.

cheers

bruce

Anita,

I use the Orange stick, and am very happy with it.

The speed is not less good than fixed-internet connection, but you'll get that with any carrier (and they tell you that at the store too).

And there's the free internet-stick offer for glocals members from Orange.

What you need to be aware of:

1. Most carriers lock you in for contracts of 12 or 24 months, which renew automatically unless you stop them.

2. Most carriers give you 2 key options on sticks:

i) paying a lower fixed fee, and then paying for each day of surfing

ii) paying a higher fixed fee, and then there's no daily fee for when you surf.

Good luck, and let us know the feedback after you get the stick...

To give people living close to the border an idea just how expensive international data-roaming is, here is Orange's price list (in German):

http://www1.orange.ch/residential_products_options_while-abroad-and-calls-abroad_international-roaming_gprs-umts.html

You pay at least 8 CHF per MB. That's 8000 CHF per GB.

If you go abroad and forget about it, you can rack-up as much as 15000 CHF per GB.

Can we have a law that requires companies to advertise their most expensive deal, not their cheapest? ;-))

You can buy their so-called "Travel Data Bundles" - but that is really a subscription from 20 to 400 CHF. Per month.

So, in practice , it can make a lot of sense to find a WIFI hot-spot and pay some dollars with your credit-card to download mail and iPhone Apps ;-)
