Reggie Problems, what can I do?

Long story short, I am having plumbing issues and my Reggie is doing nothing about it. A few months ago the toilet started acting strange, flushing by itself almost. Then after about a week, the upstairs neighbor's toilet overflowed... twice. Then ours (we weren't even home when it happened, we came home to a flooded hallway).

The Reggie hired a plumber who came in and said he fixed the problem. But now the toilet is acting strange again, doing the same thing it did before the last disaster. I called the Reggie and he said "yeah, yeah, I will get around to it" and it's been a week and he keeps saying the same thing. The Reggie also promised to fix all the water damage from the last flood which happened 2 months ago and that hasn't happened either.

What can I do? Is this in violation of any rental code? Do I have any rights as a renter?

Any advice would be appreciated!

yes ASLOCA can probably help but you will have to pay to join.  You can try by sending a registered letter to the Regie and make sure you point out in the letter that you sent a copy to ASLOCA even if you dont join.  sometimes just mentioning that organization gets them to start working.  you dont even have to send the copy to ASLOCA since you didnt join they would just tell you you have to pay first before they can help you.

also let them know that now that they are notified in writing of the problem should any damages occur because they didnt fix the problem you will be holding them accountable for costs.

if that doesnt work then join and they will help you.  its sounds like your Regie sucks anyway so you will probably be needing them in the future as it is.

remember, the regie is only acting in place of the owner (propriataire) and therefore, i would send a copy of the registrered letter to them as well.

it may well be that the owner is not at all pleased with the lack of response by the regie, who they pay, and may contact you directly to get the problem solved.

often times the owner of the building is indicated at the entrance to the building along with the posted information by the regie.

Cant recommend ALSOCA too highly!  They really do protect the rights of renters in Geneva and have helped me out tremendously over the years.  As previous poster said, it can be enough for the Régie to see you have copied your letter to them to make them take action.

You should always write rather than phone as your case will be documented whereas there is no evidence of a phone call.  You should also take digital photos (with the dates on).

Send me a PM if you need help with the French : )

I have had a lot of help from ASLOCA over the years. Certainly recommend them.

Don't find them expensive, certainly for the expertise they provide.

Yearly subscription is 65 francs and the first time you go you pay an additional 20 francs to join

Regarding their manner, have never had a problem. It maybe helps if you can be as concise as possible in your explanations as they always have a lot of people to see.

For the flooding damage, the regie will probably tell you that they have to wait for everything to dry out properly before repairs are done.

In my case it was a 3 months wait before they would start to consider repairing anything ..had mould on the walls.. the whole lot...
