Registering a secondary residence in another canton - Help please

Hi Everyone,

We are Geneva residents however my husband is going to be transferred to Neuchatel for one year for his job. He is 'attached' to Geneva for his job so must remain a resident there.

We are planning to rent an appartment in Neuchatel and keep our apartment in Geneva.

However, when I contacted the City of Neuchatel to find out how to get a parking permit, they said we must register with the contrôle de habitants as a 'séjour secondaire' (secondary residence).

Has anyone got any experience with this? Will we end up paying more tax because we 'live' in one canton and work in another?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Rachel

hi Rachel

i believe you need to go to controle des habitants in your local commune in Geneva and get any 'attestation de residence' which you then present then at the control des habitants in neuchatel with your lease contract and declare is will be a secondary residence, when You register. It will need to be renewed once a year.  I know it works like this for Vevey and montreux and it would be best to consult an accountant ( comptable) about the tax, to get best advice- there aremany accountants    chose from and should not charge too much for questions.

Hope this helps!

Hi Rachel - you are exactly right!

Here's what I found out:

1) you can live up to one year outside the canton you are registered in without it impacting your registration in your home canton

2) if you stay in another Canton temporarily for more than 30 days (but less than one year) you MUST register with the population office of your temporary canton (your home canton doesn't need to be notified - i tried to notify Geneva and they told me it wasn't important to them).

This temporary registration does not affect your residence in your home canton in any way. the only thing to be make sure to do is to deregister from your temporary canton when you return to your home canton.

the whole thing was quite painless and cost us CHF20 per person.
