Riding bikes to work in the winter
When I was in Geneva I noticed numerous people riding their bicycles in the morning on their way to work.

What is up with the courageous souls who ride bicycles to work when it is -3 celsius?

Are the very cold days of winter very few in Geneva so riding a bicycle in freezing weather is merely a minor nuisance, or have people in Geneva just adapted to harsh reality of cold winters?

the cold is not a problem - unless you come from a warm climate - and when you mount your bike, you are prepared for it - it is like the sauna, it feels so good afterwards...

Riding my bike, have a heart attack in traffic jams or meet the smelly crowd in a packed bus ??? The choice is easy when the problem is just the cold: Bicycle. Plus it's good for the health, and, as Jasper puts it: it feels so good when it stops :)

in Denmark the saying is 'it is not so much the weather as much as what you are wearing' :)

I rode to work most of the time last winter by bike (over the Üetliberg) - but not this year.

The problem is: it's too icy. And the road-salt kills your bike.

Temperature is actually not such a big issue, though after it falls below -10, certain health issues (cold air vs. lungs) crop up.

I have been riding to work even at -15 - but that was when the weather was dry.

Freshly shaved, though, it's an absolute horror ;-)

But I agree - the kick you get from it is priceless.

I concur with the two gents above : cycling to work feels so good. Now I practically jump out of bed in anticipation of the exercise and find that I'm more motivated throughout the day at work. Plus I find that my commute is at least 15 minutes quicker than driving or catching the bus and train. Granted, the cold takes a bit of getting used to, but after about 3 minutes you're hot anyway.

Personally, I dislike cycling in the rain more than the cold, it's difficult to see, quite uncomfortable and drivers seem to be less predictable.
