SMS events?
Hi all,

I find out that GOL is great for events planned 2-3 days at least in advance, but sometime there are evenings you just need to move and see friends, and if you post something, nobody will get it on time.

What do you think about the idea of events sent by SMS. That means that you just invite people for an afterwork drink at Brasseur or so for the same day, and your friend list gets it whether they have access to GOL site or not (for security reasons the access to personal sites such as GOL is forbidden at work).

Guillaume

this would presumably means you would have to personally store your friends' tely numbers stored in your own phone. Or are you suggesting this be stored somewhere within each user's GOL profile? I don't mind giving my #out to freinds but remember, this is Switzerland you're talking about where people (whether they're real Swiss or not) start pleaing the 'secrecy act' and feel it's NOYB (none of your biz) to know personal information. just my prediction. ;)

Is that the mobile no. is a "hidden field" on the profile and that each individual has the option to enable it as a communication method , and therefore messages appearing in your GOL inbox will be sms'd to your phone. I imagine there is a cost associated with this method, and if people are on your friends list the ones that would be most likely to respond are already on your phone.

I think this'd only add unnecessary spam. If you want to quickly invite a few people somewhere why not just call them? Like someone already said, if they are your friends you're likely to already have their number anyway.

I think this is a good idea. In fact, this type of thing was supposed to be one of the "killer apps" for WAP (in the old days) or 3G (more recently) mobile phones with internet connectivity.

At one time there was a fad called a "flash mob" where people would suddenly converge on a spot and then just as quickly disappear. I think they were usually organized via SMS. Not sure if people still do this, but a lot of protests are organized this way in some countries.

I'm sure the technical issues have been solved, and someone on this site surely knows how to do it. Cost-wise, Swisscom is going to get their cut, but there are services like Twitter (blogging via SMS) that have similar functionality but the users pay for it, not the web site (I think, I've never actually played with it). There are probably tools to add this type of functionality to GOL without having anything charged to GOL itself.

Too bad there's no way to get a bunch of IT geeks together in a bar and throw a problem like this at them... ;)

The price aspect is negligeable, who cares about a SMS costing 20 cts while a beer costs 4 or 5, and a movie 16?
You send SMS to 50 people having previously accepted to receive such invitations, and you have a great moment in town with many friends, it costs only 10CHF. There are even sites that allow sending SMS for free or 10cts. So what?

Of course it should be only sent to people having previously accepted to receive such invitations, and that can opt out by a kind of 'unsuscribe' SMS.
