Scary stuff...

This can take a little while to load and then again, wait after double-clicking.

If you think you can  hide in a crowd, think again. Want to bet NSA, CIA, MI5 and the Russians don't  have ones that do 10 times better than this?

Place the cursor in  the mass of people and double-click a couple times (or 'finger-spread' on a  device.)  Scary sharp.  Keep clicking on  the picture to magnify it.  ( In the case of an  iPad, just keep touching the + sign. )

This picture was taken  with a 70,000 x 30,000 pixel camera (2100 MegaPixels.)  These cameras are  not sold to the public and are being installed in strategic locations.  It  can identify a face in a multitude of  people.

It may be a trick. As it's on a website and you can't download it it can well be a series of images or a superimposed image etc...

It's not a special camera, but thousands of images put together. These large scale photos are pretty popular, especially city panoramas. Who knows what all the above mentioned agencies can see or not, but this is not some some kind of evil government spying machine. It's just a regular DSLR (with a very big and expensive telephoto lens), thousands of images stitched together by a super-powered computer (got to handle all of those pixels) but that's it. No conspiracy here! (:

The technology exists, but in a slightly different form.  Mounted in a drone flown at 20,000 feet, the ARGUS-IS can monitor an area of 25 sq km in detail.

It is said to be so accurate that it can track the progress of a Geneva road-labourer, which until now has been too slow for normal measurements.

That's not even a bunch of pictures taken with telephoto lens and then merged in a panoramic.  To me, it rather looks like a bad Photoshop job.  Anyway, Josh is the expert here about photography and digital imaging.

If you click through on the website it explains how it's done - pretty much as Josh explains. The fancy bit is a robotic camera mount which allows all the sub-pictures to be captured without any 'wobble'. Surprisingly cheap - you can make your own giga-pixel images for under 300 dollars. I'm sure the NSA version is a bit more expensive!
