Scooter licence - does anyone knows the exact rules??

Hi all,

after a lot of internet-researches, I'm totally confused now: I want to buy a scooter, a little one, 50cm3, max 45km/h.

I have, until today, a german driving licence B for cars (no A one).

Can I drive the scooter with this driving licence in Vaude or do I have to do the 6 or 8 hours of theoretical lessons in a driving school?

Everyone says something different, so now I know nothing more :-)

Thanks a lot for your help!

Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

I bought a motorbike a while ago and the garage that sold me the bike said that if it's under 250cc, you don't need to have a license (as long as you have a car license).

May be a good idea to ask the scooter shops on the requirements before you buy. They should be able to answer your questions or direct you to the authorities. Anyway, they will be the ones ordering your plates and need to check your ID and that you have a driver's license.

Good luck!

Not correct:

Only the for motorcycles of 50cc this is correct, you don't need a license.

For 250cc <11kw you need 8 practical lessons (no exam)

Than you have the A-limite for motorbikes with <25kw which needs 12 practical lessons (no exam)

And the full A is 12 lessons with an exam.

Hope this helps. on this website you can easily click and find out what's needed

Hi everybody,

thanks a lot for your answers!

But after my visit yesterday in the SAN (Service des Automobiles et de la Navigation) in Lausanne, I know the exact rules now:

Like a lot of things, the rules for riding a scooter are different in Switzerland (in Germany we can ride the 50ccm with the car-driving-licence):

You have to have an A1-licence to ride a scooter, for the 50ccm AND for the 125cmm! You DON'T have the right to ride a scooter (even the little ones!) with the B-car-driving-licence!

You have to go to the SAN and ask for a "permis d'éleves", after this you have 4 month to make the 8 hours of practical-cours in a driving school (in this time you can ride the scooter with the L-Sign on it). Then you get, witout any exam, your A1-Permit.

I'm looking forward for my 8 driving-lessons in november ;)
