Security

hey all,

so wanted a bit of advice If possible.

currently on holiday in Paris until tomorrow. We have a camera at home but it's not the best. By chance yesterday I logged on to check on the cats and see if our friend was back home. At that exact moment, we were being burgled. I couldn't believe it.

we won't know until tomorrow what's missing as the place is trashed. had a really good lock, which actually resulted in the door and frame needing replacement. All three apartments on our floor were done.

so....better late than never, we need to upgrade our security. Our place Iin Barcelona has securitas monitored, that's just come here but jeez as normal it's about 8 times the price of what we pay in bcn.

has anyone any suggestions at all?

i don't care about the possessions we have insurance. what upset me the most is I was worried about my cats....

Why didnt you alert the police when you saw that you were being burgled, they work together internationally, am sure they would have loved to catch those bastards.

Hey Dorothy, we did call the police and they came quite quick, but not quick enough. Was unbelievable to see something like that unfold and be so helpless. I feel bad for the couple opposite who I think are still away.

Having a good lock won't help much as if the thief cannot pick it, he'll simply break apart the lock from the door and frame -- like it did in your case.  Have a security bar installed; it costs around 1000 CHF.

In Poland if we don't want 'surprises' of this kind we get the door called Gerda installed. Maybe in Switzerland they have something similar, or maybe they could deliver and install it for you. The lock cannot be broken, and the door cannot get damaged. There are 12 spots where the huge bars go from the door to the wall (all around which means both sides, bottom to the floor and top. I have door of this kind myself. But then watch out for your windows.

Good luck,

two tips:

1) you lock should be coned-shaped. it's called "rosace" in french. Burglars have more difficulties to break it.

2) if this measure is not sufficient, install a security bar across your door.
