Does anyone have any experience of what happens to independantes/self-employed if they are unable to work through illness or other circumstances? I assume they can't apply for chomage or anything like that?

For Chommage : If you have been paying your insurance, and can prove an income over a period of time, yes I think you can.
Sickness insurance is different, and should pay for loss of earings in the event of illness.
Speak to both and find out... worst anyswer from either or both is no.

it used to be that if you had a company ( sa or sarl ) and emplyed yourself, you could fire yourself and collect unemplyment insurance. but, the law has changed.
if you are an independent there is no insurance scheme for unemplyment private or otherwise that i know of here in CH. if you had a sickness insurance which covered your annual income, then you might be eligible for some benefits.
but the chomage is only valid for employees who have paid in for at least 12 months.
depending on how long you have held a residence permit, you may be eligible for social services benefits.

If you have Taggeld (dont know the English Expression) Insurance, are selfemployed, get yourself a good doctor, most of them are for they are also on that insurance, get sick and collect your money. Depending where you work, in your home out of your home, for those guys from the Taggeld Insurance come and check and even send detectives. If you do it good, you get your money.
