Sign the Appeal for Needs-Driven R&D
Please sign the essential health research appeal that has already been signed by more than 5,000 concerned scientists, policy makers, and individuals (including 19 Nobel laureates). This appeal calls for government leadership to support needs-driven health R&D.

Every day 35,000 people die needlessly from lack of drugs for neglected diseases such as AIDS, malaria, TB, sleeping sickness, and leishmaniasis. The profit-driven R&D model cannot develop new, improved drugs for them.

Scientific knowledge exists to develop new treatments.

Political will does not. How long can we rely on philanthropy to support R&D projects?

Now is the time to capture the momentum that has begun in the new millennium: the upcoming World Health Assembly later this month will consider two essential health R&D resolutions, one derived from the WHO’s CIPIH Report and another proposed by Kenya and Brazil. The fact that these resolutions are even being considered is a step forward, but there are still miles to go to correct the fatal imbalance.

Best regards to all,
Ann-Marie
