Some clumsy waitress...
spilled half a glass of hot wine tonight at Demi-Lune, where I stopped
by to say hi to the "hot bald guys and beauties".

She spilled it on my beautiful coat.. well, yeah I love it that's true :-))
I didn't yell at her, I didn't cry, I didn't make a huge scandal...
i really tried to keep it cool. It was just an accident, I got this.. That happens (first
time for me in this case), nobody got hurt...blah blah blah... and she apologised.

But then I told her "it's ok, it's an accident... I'll just send you the dry-cleaning bill
and we'll be good"... and she looked at me like I was talking non-sense.
I asked if she told her manager I will come the following day with the bill, to make
sure they won't pretend nothing happened...

And then, here's what I really didn't like. The guy was trying to explain to me that
somebody bumped into her and that it wasn't her fault... and that apparently it
wasn't their problem. So i told him that 1st of all, there was nobody behind her and
that 2nd of all his answer was unacceptable. She made a mistake, it's fine, i'm not gonna
hold it against them... but u messed up, u clean up and take ur responsability, no?

I mean if I did spill a beverage on someone, the least I could offer is to pay for
the drycleaning or for the drink if it wasn't mine...

What would be your reaction? do u think i overreacted and asked too much??

Cheers
Phoebs

...she's the one who should have not only proposed to pay for the cleaner, but also to take your coat there. But, as Doctor House said: "Humanity is overrated"...

overreacted....instead of being nice, civil and reasonable...sometimes with people in the service industry you have to play the hysterical woman card to get anything done. You'd think that being polite and discreet, people will behave reasonably - but no, in situations like these, shouting and outing the idiots around you really does help.

and I thought about it today over lunch.
But i'll try the nice way and see what they will tell me
when I will bring them the bill.

They have an insurance for that (responsabilit? civile)
they shouldn't even try to deny...

Anyway, i'll go hysterical next time :-)))

quality of service in this town can be abysmal. Most of the time I would be willing to overlook the poor service if they just apologized. No, instead they say something lame such as, "il n'y a pas de mal" (nothing bad happened). Yes, they have insurance and even if they don't they should want you and your friends to leave satisfied.

I have found that firm insistence is the best policy. Keep going up the food chain until the owner, if possible. If that doesn't work you can always contact the Federation des Consommateurs Romandes (sorry for any mispellings) and it might end up in one of their monthly newsletters. You could also write a letter to the Tribune de Geneve mentioning the offending place.

I think they definitely have to take care of your coat. Another example that customer service has to improve in this city!! Unfortunately this is just one of many examples of unprofessionalism here!

yet, although it may not be her fault, it is not your fault either. You were a guest at their '?tablissement' and whether a brick falls on your head while you are sitting there and dining or whether they spill wine on you – it is without any doubt their responsibility and therefore up to them to find a solution. Bonne chance.

Her attitude is rude, she acted in a hypocrict and irresponsible way !
And you are right, you know in Geneva there's a stupid opened attitude like :
"Oh you must be cool, you must accept everything with a smile" even if somebody do something with your stuff ! even if your clothes are dirty, blabla"

At the end, polite attitude and respect are neglicted just for keeping "tolerance".

I know that having the waiter paying for those accidents is a habit in other countries, but just face it, it's not the case here. As the say goes "Swiss live peacefully and milk their cow". The most peacfull way being accepting her apologies and not asking any money, that's what you were expected to do. As a local, if my coat got dirt from a waiter, I'd be annoyed, but I'd pay the cleaning myself.

Shit happens. I don't bill seaguls when they aim at me, why should I bill a waiter?

My (free) two cents.

being Swiss means you never have to say you're sorry? Swiss wait staff have the mentality of birds? In any case, I doubt your coats are as glamourous as those of Phoebe.

True, thank goodness this isn't the States. In Texas Phoebe might have gotten away with shooting the waitress (joke, people). In Los Angeles, she might have sued successfully for the dry cleaning bill as well as for pain and suffering caused during the incident. Her story would have been turned into a television movie-of-the-week, starring Lindsay Lohan as Phoebe... Oh well, every country can't be like the good-old U.S. of A.....:)

and the manager should have been hanged, drawn and quartered for employing such unskilled workforce and most certainly underpaying them!

All right, you can't do that anymore in Geneva... though it would be a good incentive for improvement in service...

It is an unfortunate reality that service in GVA is downright terrible nowadays, regardless of venue. Most waiters & waitresses are "just" untrained students, managed by incompetent people that most often don't even come from food & beverage industry.

That's an unfortunate fact but one can't do much about it besides being very discriminating in choice of venues. And it will hardly improve since, as Hobbes quite correctly outlined, Swiss people hate to complain. Hence "service with an attitude" and high chances to get away with it...

In the US you could probably sue the place for the damage and emotional distress lol perhaps even claim that you turned lesbian or frigid because of that and have a serious chance of a positive settlement, but here...

But can I have Anne Hathaway in my movie instead of Lindsay??

Joke aside, I don't think Swiss people will just accept such
a thing without ever complaining. They're not all stupid :-))

And to close this silly chapter of my life, I can gladly announce
a happy ending.. Demi-Lune's "Office" called me yesterday afternoon
to tell me they will refund the cost of the dry-cleaning.

So I guess, you just need to take a stand for what you think is right
and not just stay the "victim of an accident"
(some others would call that bad karma!!)

Thanks everyone for your support and advice
Have a wonderful week-end

Hobbes, I think that Phoebe assumed the fact that "shit can happen" by not making any fuss and dealing gracefully with the whole matter. Now, fair is fair, the waitress (or her boss - if he feels responsible for her) should also understand the same principle: ultimately, while not being guilty, she's responsible... and therefore as a responsible person (unlike a seagull) she should just take charge.

Anyway, congrats to Phoebe for staying firm on her legitimate principles and staying a class act during all the matter. (But remember, lady, if you break a glass at Demi-Lune, you pay for it...)

(Hobbes, de toute mani?re, votre "seagul" sans ses deux "l" avait du mal ? voler... : [ )

Not really a big deal, but was surprised by this, so why not share it there.
March 06, I was in Hawaii, rent a car and got a fine an evening. I forgot to pay it, and realized it when I was back. It was a 35$ fine, for parking in the wrong side (which meant I had cross a white line to park..), and as it was not a big think and 6000kms away, I put it in a trash (ok, maybe not the most clever thing to do).
This morning, I received something from the rental company, telling me they had to pay it, asking me to pay them back + 25$ for administrative fee. I was pretty amazed they did that after 1.5 year, especially has they gave me 15 days to pay and threatening me of some not so nice things if I don't (and the letter took 10 days to come, as for them geneva is in france ;) ).
