Student accommodation in Oxford

Very long shot this, and believe me, we have looked on many internet sites but does anyone have any direct or personal experience with student accommodation in the Cowley/Littlemore areas of Oxford please? Looking for my student who needs to start studying as from end September for 2 years.

Thanks to all for any advice or suggestions

You could contact the Oxford and Cambridge Dining Club of Geneva.  One or more of their members might be able to provide input.  See their website for details.

Hope this helps.

If studying at the university itself you should contact the college that the person concerned will join and they will engage the student accomodation staff for you.  There are geographical limits on how far away you can live and they can advise on this.  The university owns a large percentage of the student accomodation (and the city) so they are always the best starting point.

If they are studying at Brooks or Said it's still worth contacting them as they will have local contacts.

Thank you very much for this information!

Actually, he will be studying at the SAE Music School in Littlemore : do the above paramaters still apply do you think? Again, thanks

I would contact SAE first, but it may still be worth paying a visit to the University of Oxford admin offices (in Wellington Square) to see if they can provide any useful contacts.

Yes of course, we are doing just that, but being French, my student has to be doubly careful. Jaw-dropping deposits for rather tacky private accommodation.

Difficult to pay a visit to the university whilst here in the Haute Savoie but we could contact the admin offices if all else fails.

I'm afraid that's the reality: high cost and low quality.  Oxford property is more rare and expensive than in London.

A visit for a few days before term starts would be well worth it to sort this out.  You certainly need to check any area outside the city centre that you might be considering as some of the suburbs are remarkably rough. (Are you sure about Cowley?)

On Bastien's behalf, I have contacted the Oxford and Cambridge club here in Geneva for advice at Ritchie's suggestion - stoney silence. At your suggestion I have contacted Michael Sibley at the Oxford Administration Wellington Square.

He himself has contacted the school and no, we are definitely not sure about Cowley - is there something we should know? Haven't live in the UK for 38 years so doubtless many things have changed [for the worse]?

As Littlemore is outside the city centre, apart from the school itself, what else could you suggest please? Maybe homestay would be a better bet for him until he finds his feet and can speak fluent English?

They are depending heavily on our advice so we do not want to give them suggestions which are not good. TIA
