Suicide Squirrel Knocks Out Swiss TV -- Bonus Question at Article's End

By Drew Cullen

TV and radio were knocked out for a couple of hours in Switzerland on Sunday - after a squirrel got itself electrocuted. The trams stopped running too for a short time in Zurich, the venue for the squirrel-short circuit action.

Swiss TV's emergency power back-up was too puny too cope with demand - and many Swiss sports fans were left very frustrated. The outage at Switzerland's national broadcaster coincided with the closing ceremony of the Olympics and also the Formula 1 race in Valencia.

The German language site Baz.Online has a pic of the dead squirrel - and the sub-station that triggered the power cut. How can you resist? (http://www.bazonline.ch/panorama/vermischtes/Eichhoernchen-legt-SF-lahm/story/29684666). ®

Bootnote

Our thanks for the tip to Christoph Schneeberger, who writes: "People are quite upset since those channels are paid by a lot of tax francs to inform us citizens in case of catastrophic events." So how many squirrels would it need to take out Switzerland?

I was on a train on way back from Zurich when all of a sudden it stopped for awhile with no explanation from the train conductor. not sure if it was related, as i am sure i was way past zurich, but supposedly the whole system would shut down so as not to get a pileup of trains on the tracks where some are stopped dead on it's tracks....

what a bizarre story. even scarier is how bedrock finds such photos!

I think Europe will be fine:

The war kept killing the squirrels. It killed the very good, the very gentle, and the very brave impartially. It killed those who were none of these. It killed, without hurry, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, brothers and sisters. It killed the lover and the loved. Those left alive, felt the death more than the dead. Any squirrel who brought courage into the world of squirrels became the problem. The propaganda broke him, or the war broke him, or the war tried to kill him to break him. Those the war could not break it killed.

Henry, the brown squirrel, rebelled. He abandoned the war and said farewell to arms. Make love, not war... he remembered reading on glocals. So did Catherine, the red squirrel.

One wonderful day, they met. And kissed.

Aha! you pay attention Casuistik. Charles is Catherine's little boy... the boy's dad too was killed in that on-going squirrel war. Charles loves reading short stories, and listening to poems. His favorite story characters are indeed Mary, June... (as Mrs. 413 tells us)

Henry once read the following squirrel poem to Charles, paraphrased from Oriah... while Catherine happily listened with glitter in her eyes..

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love for your dream for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon...
I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain mine or your own
without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy mine
or your own if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers
and toes without cautioning us to be careful
be realistic remember the limitations of being a squirrel.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true.
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.

If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty every day.
And if you can source your own life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes.”

I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.
