...the more you squeeze them, the more juice you get."
What do you think of that sentence ? What is your strategy to get the most of your providers ? Do you tend to pressurise them above required levels on delays, prices and quality, playing the nasty angry never happy customer even if you know they're doing their best ? Or, on the opposite, do you try to build a friendly relationship so they would do their real best to always serve you to the highest standard ? Or do you alternatively play the "good and the evil cops" game ?
I'm sometimes puzzled how much you can obtain from suppliers when you insist a little bit. I've seen run-out-3-weeks-to-ship-1-cubic-meter supplies that where "suddenly found in the warehouse", or "bellow cost level" prices that would sunk when the supplier had to get forgiven for longer than agreed delivery time.
My preffered strategy is being allways nice, but looking a bit fool if needed. Like "I understand that you're out of that supply. I know it's not your fault. But my boss needs it you see. What can you do for me ? Oh, it's going to take 7 weeks. That's too long. How can you make it for next week ?".... usually works pretty well because people pitty you ;-)
What's yours ?

Think the strategy sounds fine. Would stick to being polite and understanding, but at the same time making it clear that business is business so a professional level of service is required.

Was the saying I was trying to remember in this case. "He/She who has the gold makes the rules". In other words, paying customers have the power to demand what they wish to a certain extent. Best wishes, Phil
