Criminal Code, Civil Code and Code of Obligations available in English
Bern, 02.12.2010 - The Federal Chancellery has published translations of the Swiss Criminal Code, the Swiss Civil Code and the Code of Obligations in English. These latest additions complement the collection of federal legislation in English which now consists of around 90 acts and ordinances. The texts can be consulted online at www.admin.ch.
The Federal Chancellery's English Language Service has produced a translation of the Swiss Criminal Code and adapted and updated existing translations of the Civil Code and the Code of Obligations. All three documents are now available online.
These new additions complement the existing collection, which now consists of some 90 acts and ordinances starting with the Federal Constitution and covers legislation in fields ranging from political rights and financial market supervision to environmental protection, human genetic testing and vocational and professional education.
While there are no plans to translate the full body of federal legislation into English, the collection is expected to continue to grow as further selected laws of international relevance are made available. 2011 will see the addition of the Criminal Procedure Code and the Civil Procedure Code.
The published texts follow the structure of the Classified Compilation of Federal Legislation (SR/RS) allowing the reader to switch easily from the English text to the corresponding text in one of the official languages. The texts can be consulted in html format or downloaded as a PDF file.
The English translations of federal legislation can be found at the following address:
www.admin.ch (see Direct link to > Legislation > Classified Compilation of Federal Legislation or Swiss Legislation)
It should be noted that as English is not an official language of the Swiss Confederation these translations are provided for information purposes only and have no legal force.
