Swiss/French Border closing times

Hey there

Recently moved to Cessy, France. I have to drive across the border pretty often. Does anyone perhaps know what times they close and open the border each day? if a timetable even exsists?

Becomes sometimes they close at 7pm, sometimes they close later than that and sometimes they don't even close for the night!

I know the Ferney-Voltaire one stays open but do the rest have available timetables or something?

Please post, I can't keep driving back and forth!

Thanks so much x

i dont think they close the borders at all... the guards might stop working at them, but you can still drive through-

never heard of a closed border excepot during wartime....

Charlie - the smaller borders always used to close at night. Barrier down and you had to double back and go to a larger one.

I am sure there is information posted at all the small borders. But the trick is to use only the main crossing at night

From Geneva to nearby France I have never seen a closed border crossing at night and I have done several. I also dont think that any of those I have seen have barriers.

I see which one you mean, the one in the forrest part! I saw it closed last time, so you are forced to go all the way back to Ferney!

I unfortunately don't know when they close, there is a sign near the barrier that says something but I've never stopped to have a look...

I've looked for sites but cannot find.  The double back from the forest one is long. You have to go through during the day and stop or ask a neighbour who works in Switzerland

They definately do close.

Yes, the one I am specifically speaking about is the one in the forest. It closes at 7pm most nights. Like I say 'most nights', this is hard to work with because it is rather silly to have to drive all the way back if it closes at different times each evening. How is anyone meant to know?? :P The OTHER Ferney-Voltaire one also closes sometime in the evening (the one near the Ferney swimming pool).

Thanks for the info about the sign boards near the barriers! Next time I pass through I'll definately stop!

Just always take the main one then, or there is another one close by in the direction of Meyrin near the E Leclerc store. When I went to Cessy my GPS pointed me to use the main one so I don't think there's any advantage to use smaller one and also better from a safety perspective. PS: if you had a bit too much to drink etc the second one I pointed above is always unmanned and never closes ;)

You will eventually get a definitive answer. I hardly ever cross the border on that side of Geneva but I seem to remember that weekend closing times were different from weekday and then there could be different times in winter. And I bet every border crossing has its own crossing time.

some small border roads close at night, they have barriers so it's easy know.

I know two of them, the one going from Certoux to Saint-Julien-en-Genevois and the second is the small one in Croix-de-Rozon.

This last one closes at 7pm and open at 6 am. I used to live in that village  :)  and I still cross the border everyday on that road.

I guess that all the other have the same kind of closing hours.

defect? to where?

Sep 25, 12 14:41

I shall defect to Switzerland, the land of opportunity and referendums and leave the horrors of global economic tales of woe behind. I dream of a world of chocolate and cheese, that is always melted and goes with everything, and a world free of open shops on a Sunday....

But alas, the border is closed, home to my watchless French home for me..

Sorry about being blunt, what about opening your eyes? It's clearly indicated on both sides of this border crosing (Versonnex) that it's closed for motorised transport (bikes and pedestrians are allowed) from 1900 to 0700.

Due to the bus, they no longer close the barrier exactly at 1900, but it's still illegal, even if the barrier is open.

Is there a gate on the Certoux crossing? There is another one up towards Viry or Valerie or somewhere like that which closes at night but no gate. Croix-de-Rozon certainly has a gate that they close. Been caught a couple of times but the driver round is not far. I've also seen border guards at Certoux doing very careful checks on cars.

Hi Toni:

Suggest you give swiss customs in Geneva a call. Usually small border posts in remote places with small traffic opens at 6:30AM and close at 7:00PM but it is working hours are usually posted on/or near the gate of each specific border post...

Good luck
