Swiss obsession with Clean Cars?
Here's another observation about Swiss life (following the thread about folks not giving up their places for old people in GVA buses):

Swiss people seem to be obsessed with keeping their cars ultra-clean.

Some examples:

 • Most of the Swiss cars I see on the roads are amazingly clean, inside & utside.
 • On weekends, I often see crazy lines outside car-wash tunnels.
 • Some of my own swiss friends went crazy when a bird took a shit on their car. They said they were ashamed to drive a 'dirty car' in town.

This, in contrast to most other countries I've seen, where the majority of cars of kept in 'ok' shape but nothing more. And in stark contrast to the way I keep my own car, but I'm a known dirty-pig so that doesn't count.

Anyone else notice this (about the swiss cars, not about me being a dirty pig)?

mmmm could be because the % of fancy car vs standard cars (fancy = BMW, Mercedes, Audi A3 and above, you get it, anything more then your standard city car), is actually higher here? I noticed that men are more obsessed with cleaning the cars, and the fancier the car the shinier they want it to be :)

Or another idea could be the price of the cars. The one I bought was at least few thousends CHF more expensive here then in France, Germany or Italy. For what I paid for it, I want to be able to not only liking it, but litterally LOVING it. Which means that I want to keep it clean and nice looking for as much as I can.

3rd options. Lots of cars are Leased (in Italy is not possible to get a leasing as a private citizen, which on the contrary is the standard here) .... and when leasing a car towant to give it back after few years to get a nicer one car mainteinance becomes more important. Including washing, as I heard here several times that bird poo, dust and pollins are not good for the brilliance of the colours and corrode the 'metallic' paint.

Hi

It seems like there is always an exception to the rule:

1. My car is the dirtiest ever. At least outside.

2. And it is a BMW.

3. And it's always parked outside.

4. And it was not cheap.

So:

1. If you leave you're car outside every day, you don't give a (bird)shit :P

2. If you're social life is your car, it will be clean...

I'm using the principal that the car will clean itself if let it go long enough , as I'd heard this applied to washing hair , if you let your hair go beyond the dirty stage it will start to clean itself with natural oils (No , I've not tried this with my hair, but will try with my car)

I was about to say that I am Swiss and I don't have any obsession with clean cars... probably because I don't have a car ;)

But I have realized that I've spent half an hour today to clean my scooter :D

Maybe we do have obsession with cleaning every kind of vehicles...

I have to go now, as I still have to clean my rollerblades for tonight's Monday Night Skate Tour ;)

Contrary to most people's impressions, I own a car. But I would like to flag a possible error in the following (and possibly raise a challenge):
[b]

It seems like there is always an exception to the rule:
I sincerely doubt that. My car is categorically the dirtiest ever. 1. because I keep it outside and 2 because I never wash it. 3 because I don't care. But reason 4 is far more important. Reason 4 is that I work at the end of a small road out in the countryside between Versoix and Sauverny. The road is used by two groups of traffic: people that work in my building coming in and out in their cars and on their bikes; and people from the stables behind my workplace coming in and out on their fucking horses. Honestly, there are tonnes of the stuff. Year by year, there must be enough horseshit dumped on Chemin des Maillettes to spread over several thousand square km of strawberry fields. One of the interesting things about arriving in the morning is to find out just exactly where the courteous horse-women have been considerate enough to let their horses dump a load. One of the main challenges of my job is to carve a route down the 400m between Route de Sauverney and the car park without splattering fresh layers of horseshit up the wings. Between the horses on that road and the SUV driving moms at the international school in Versoix, my morning commute is nothing but cursing (at least when I do it in a car).

So your car is the dirtiest? Pics or STFU! ;)

Good point:)

But man, you don't don't know how dirty mine is. The challenge is tough, horseshit is nothing you want to joke with.

I am in. Mine is dirtier! I'll try to take a picture of it tonight (how embarassing to stand in the streets and take pictures of muddy cars....). But in one point I am the leader in the maillot jaune: Mine has the ugliest color ever.

This sounds like a challenge.. Mine is only cleaned when my wife decides to swap cars with me and I get it back nice and shiny. At the moment it's suffering from having been filled with garden waste and several trips to the dump..

Mine only gets the engine block cleaned for the inspection. For this I just pick a sunny day and drive it in circles over Place des Nations while the jumpy fountains are on. It's pretty effective. If you're going to try this, I suggest you place a prank emergency call to the police first; try and ensure that any passing piggies have other things occupying their single collective brain cell.

I've heard of bragging about who's got the better, nicer car, but is this is unheard of in public forum of challenging each other who's got the dirtiest ;)

may need to use mashable for people to cast their votes. i know with cars that are leased, at least for my boss he always got his car cleaned everytime he got it back from the garage aftergetting it fixed/serviced. then again i think that was the only times he ever had it washed.  and no he's not swiss but of english decent.

now the Japanese are on average more fanatics about keeping their cars clean.  i think more to do with a shame factor driving a dirty car.

andy, isn't it tougher to get the inside cleaned? afterall, you just need to go though a car wash and it's done on the outside.  my car will go through the car wash (especially during winters after a snow storm to get rid of the salt) but cleaning the inside... that takes effort with vacuum cleaner and dusting and....

you know in London, some department store car park areas have guys coming around to clean your car. you just pay them and while you're shopping, they wash your car. you com back from shopping and car's cleaned. it was pretty neat and great business concept.

Jay: you got it all wrong.

What will you do when you go out with a guy with a clean mind (like Catalin)? He'll take you out to a boring politically-correct movie, then talk arts and philosphy with you, all while wearing his clean tie and saying 'yes sir' all the time.

But if you go out with a guy with a dirty mind (like me for example) you'll have far more fun! (You just have to be careful not to touch my car so you won't get any infections)

Nir

PS, I was just kidding about my car before. Here's my real car. The man standing next to it is Rasputin, who temps as my driver sometimes.

Re: Swiss obsession with Clean Cars?

My wife cant clean the car, probably in case I see all the bloody scratches shes managed to make in the paintwork....

I can't clean my car due to it being covered in pollen, and Im allergic, to both pollen and cleaning.

re the engine size and unsaid private pants parts conversation....

Had this conversation live on WRG a while back... an Audi TT does not stand for "tiny todger"

the engine size inverse proportion to cock size is a pure myth!

If any girl tries to tell you otherwise shes bluffing!

I prefer to travel in a clean car for the same reasons that I prefer to wear clean clothes. It is just nicer. For instance, if you had the choice of putting on a clean shirt in the morning or putting on a shirt covered in bird droppings which one would you go for?

Like it or not, the car you travel in and the condition it is in might say just as much about you as the clothes you wear or the way you present yourself. For some people that is of little interest and that is fine. However the world would be a less interesting place if the mystery woman in her immaculately clean Ferrari did not drive past me each morning as I walk to work. When that car goes past it seems to put a smile on the faces of everyone on the street, as if it has somehow got their day off to a good start. Perhaps even inspired them to work that bit harder so that one day they might afford something like that themselves. Nobody seems to know who she is, or if she is single (highly unlikely), but somehow she manages to bring some happiness to many people each morning.

Would so many people look and be inspired if her car was in terrible condition, broken and dirty? I doubt it.

To get back to the original subject, I really don't think it's got anything to do with being Swiss, we all know how many people here are not Swiss, I think it is a personal pride thing that you find all over the world, especially with people who have smart cars. As someone pointed out,  most people live in flats so don't have a hose to wash their cars with.
