SwissInfo: "Obama may have Swiss roots"

Obama may have a Swiss ancestor

US presidential candidate Barack Obama may have Swiss roots, according to a French archivist.

Six generations back, in 1749, one of Obama's ancestors, named Christian Gutknecht, emigrated from the village of Bischwiller in Alsace in eastern France and settled in America.

But the Bischwiller archivist, Christian Gunther, says the Gutknecht parents probably came from canton Bern at the very beginning of the 18th century. They lived in a street specially built for immigrants from Zurich and Bern.

Christian, who was born in 1722, changed his name to Goodnight in America.

According to the Swiss family name handbook, the name Gutknecht is native to villages in the cantons of Zurich and Fribourg.

That would account for his good looks, his dashing style and his oratorial finesse. ;)

I assume this means that while in America, Christian changed his name to 'Goodnight'. Not that he changed it to 'Goodnight in America'. Which is a shame really: 'Goodnight in America' would have made an excellent surname.

Greetings from the Atacama desert.

If you google "goodnight in america" (and the quotes are important) you only get four hits. This is a lot less than I thought, since I presumed there would be some trashy movie with that title. But apparently not. Anyway, the second hit is some contributed Naruto fan fiction of a genre known as "romance". It involves the classic line (which according to google isn't at all that classic): let me show you how we say goodnight in America. But Ino blew Sasuke out and the poor dude didn't get anywhere. Next time.
