Geneva police round up suspected burglars

Geneva police have arrested 55 Georgians and Russians suspected of being behind a large rise in burglaries in French-speaking Switzerland during the past year.

More than 100 officers were involved in the operation in eight different locations on Tuesday, when 45 adults and ten children were arrested. Officers also seized jewellery, watches, clothes, computers and a firearm, the police said on Wednesday.

A special unit set up to combat the sharply rising number of burglaries in the region carried out the operation. Geneva police say the number of burglaries rose by 21 per cent in 2008 over the previous year.

Georgian nationals are responsible for a large proportion of these crimes, authorities say. Of the 305 burglars arrested in Geneva in 2008, 69 came from Georgia. A further 30 came from Moldova, Lithuania and Russia.

Out of a total of 100 people arrested for burglaries in Geneva so far this year, 40 are Georgians, the police say.

At the beginning of April the Vaud cantonal police arrested 34 Georgians suspected of being responsible for 150 burglaries in various cantons.

I just listed all the people on Glocals that come from ex-Soviet states (and a few others that I thought just looked a bit suspicious) and mailed it to the police. I guess the admins will have a bit of work on their hands handing over the IP addresses, but in the long-run we'll all be sleeping a little better thanks to me.

>> 45 adults and ten children

Are you sure it was glocals, and not some other site you frequent?
1. I was talking about phase two of the operation, I only sent the email after reading Translator's post. I just want to help the police round up the remainder.

2. As I understand it, some people on Glocals (but not all) have children. Some people on Glocals (but not all) have parents. Some people on Glocals (but not all) know people that aren't even on Glocals (actually that last one probably isn't true).

3. Next on my list is to deal with the thieving Dutch.

1. Astronomers have relentlessly argued that stars are in fact burning gas clouds (whilst insisting there is no oxygen in space, nor someone with a very big lighter)
Horseshit. Everyone knows that the solar oxygen abundance is log(O/H)+12 = 8.6, ackkshully.
bedrock (08/05/2009)

2. They submit it takes 16 billion years from the most distant known star to travel to earth (whereas we know the earth is only 4-5 billion years old!)
If I'm following you correctly, you're saying that it takes an hour to get here from Lausanne on the train, but only 20 minutes to drink a can of Feldschlossen on the platform.
bedrock (08/05/2009)

3. They thereby have deprived Anglophone parents everywhere of the legitimacy to sing 'Twinkle twinkle little star' unless they insert silly questions such as 'how much black mass is there?' and 'is the universe shrinking or collapsing?' which make terrible rhyme
When children reach a certain level, the give up on twinkle twinkle little star and move on to David Weinberg's dark matter rap.
bedrock (08/05/2009)

4. They have stolen from the rich for many years to pursue their puerile purveyance of what they claim are ancient sources of radiation under the cover of scientific exploration and progress
No no no no. Nobody ever said anything about progress.
bedrock (08/05/2009)

5. This constitutes the theft of dreams and money
The rich don't have dreams, you idiot.
bedrock (08/05/2009)

6. It also leads to the conclusion - elementary dear hayes - that astronomers are part of the organized crime ring from the east (which the bible already had concluded when it deliberately obscured the source of the gold and myrrh), who are very good at inventing convincing online identities
I don't mind the organised crime bit, but how did you shoe-horn the East into that argument?
bedrock (08/05/2009)

I suggest we reach an amicable solution.
Never!

wait wait wait wait... how'd I get stuck in this argument?  and how's it that I happened to catch my eyes on this long bantering thread? I started googling my name to see what would come up... and led me to this link. :ermm:

but bedrock, surely there are worse words in the english language than 'elopement'? I could think of a few but wouldn't care to post...

If I'm not mistaken, your 2007 Oscar was for being everywhere. It follows, therefore, that you should be in every argument.
