Swisster: Annual bills for radio-tv licence fees

Annual bills for radio-TV licence fees
by Swisster Staff
October 13, 2010 | 12:18

Swiss households will be billed once a year for radio and television licence fees instead of on a quarterly basis, the federal communications department announced on Wednesday.

A private company, Billag, is contracted to issue the bills on behalf of the government.

The new billing plan is expected to result in savings, the communications department said.

Households with radios and TVs are billed a total of 462 francs each annually, with revenues used to defray costs for the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation.

The fees for 2011 remain unchanged from levels set in 2007.

The TV fee is 292.80 francs while the radio fee is 169.20 francs.

The national broadcaster can also expect higher revenues from enhanced advertising possibilities, the government said.

Not  only do they want your money but they will send you to debt collection if you don't pay.

Furthermore,  everyone is required to "declare" themselves to Bilag (the billing agency).  If you don't and they find you later, you will pay all the fees for arrears, debt collection and so on.

So, if you relocate any where within Switzerland,  you are responsible for sending them the change  of address form so they can bill you.

The only persons exempt from this tax are:

1) those having no equipment  in their "household" capable of  receiving radio and  television;

2) those individuals  receiving social  security (AVS) or  state disability insurance (AI) who  receive written  permission from the government, after havinig submitted a written request.

Bilag's Q and A says that the rationale that Swiss television programming is crapulous is  no defense  for non-payment.  Undecided
