Switzerland's contributions to humanity

To paraphrase the Monty Python boys, "What have the Swiss ever done for us"?

Was Harry Lime right when he said in the 1949 film 'The Third Man":

"in Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace – and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

According to Graham Greene, who wrote the screenplay based on his novel, those words were actually improvised during the shooting by Orson Welles, who played Harry Lime. But how right was he (ok, ok, aside from the fact that the cuckoo clock did not originate in Switzerland)?

Can we have your civil and respectful comments about the contribution of our host country to humanity? Positive and negative?

To get you started: what about Nestle? Were their products -from infant food (Nestle) and Nescafe, bouillon cubes to Nespresso-, steps forward or part of a downward slide away from natural foods? This is actually what made me raise the question.

Precision watches? Pharmaceutical products? Swiss chocolate? Your thoughts?

Serious or humourous, but, respectful please. And with the understanding that our perceptions say as much about ourselves as about the subject observed.

The California Gold Rush began in early 1848 with the discovery of a gold nugget on property owned by a Swiss immigrant named John Sutter. Within a year the United States, and much of the world, was seized by "Gold Fever" as prospectors flocked to California.

and wasn't Albert Einstein a swiss, relatively speakingSmile

( Albert Einstein was born at Ulm, in Württemberg, Germany, on March 14, 1879. ... In 1901, the year he gained his diploma, he acquired Swiss citizenship )
