TV Repair

Hello !

My TV doesn't work since yesterday (only sound, no picture) and I just saw that the warranty has expired 2 months ago :(

Does anyone know where I could get it repaired? Should I contact Fust, Interdiscount or similar, or should I see a small repair company (in Geneva or French side) which might be cheaper.

Any tips welcomed ! Thanks a lot in advance !

Re: TV Repair

did you notice anything strange between when it last worked and now? Is it flatscreen or the old style tube?

It's gonna sound like a REALLY silly question, but it's worth asking just to make sure the answer is "no".... has the brightness been somehow turned all the way down to "0"? Is there more than one source for the TV where maybe one works, but not the other? Do you get a picture for other things like DVD or Wii? Is the video connection solid, not pulled out slightly? Have you tried a different connection? Maybe you are correct with SCART cables, so you could try HDMI. Or optical. Or RGB. S-Video. Or whatever.

After all that, I think that FUST advertisements make a point of saying "Even if you didn't purchase from FUST!" They'll come out and look at/repair your TV.

Good luck. Let us know what you do and how you get on.

Thanks for your reply!

It's a LCD, yes I tried few different sources, actually it's kind of weird, there is a square of fixed blue pixels displayed on the corner of the TV, the rest stays black... it became like that all of a sudden while i was watching it...

I guess I will contact Fust as I bought it there.

I had to return my TV under warranty in one of the big stores and I noticed that the repair outside the warranty is a fixed 150 for flat screens. That's not cheap. Maybe time for a new TV? The prices are at an all time low right now, you can have really good deals. Panasonic's top end plasmas that were in the 2000 range a few months ago sell now for under 800. In my view plasma TVs have the best bang for the buck right now.

how big is this alleged "square of fixed blue pixels"?

is your TV capable of multiple sources? Maybe this is Picture-in-Picture and it's showing the second source?

sounds like an interesting challenge, but I'm guessing it's *not* something serious.

>Catalin, I bought it 1300 chf, I know prices decreased a lot but I'm not really willing to buy a new one for now... actually I would be ok for me to pay150 chf but I guess that doesnt include picking and shipping :(

>Zonked. hmm let's say it's a 10 cm * 20 cm square. I will try tonight to unplug  everything and try to change sources through my remote.

Nicolas,

The store was Conforama in Meyrin. You need to take it to their customer service, and then take it back home after it's fixed. They handle the shipping to the manufacturer for repair. I personally had  a bad experience with them and the repair takes 3-4 weeks, but maybe it's an option for you.

You (or the salesperson) need to check the manufacturer's and the store's policies on dead/stuck pixels. A cluster of stuck pixels usually makes for a replacement candidate, but the policies varies.

good to know I'm not the only one - my TV also decided on a career change to Radio (ie only sound) from all sources. Did you get yours repaired? Where did  you go?

just going to check the brightness now

No finally, I brought the TV to the store (fust), and I got convinced I should buy a new one which I did. It was a a good discount, and it would have costed a lot to get my TV fixed (close to 500 chf according to the sales guy) + a long time to wait without TV (3 weeks at least) + the pain to go back pick it up again (considering the so tight time of store openning here - I went during my lunch break and had to ask a friend to go with me to carry it...). So that's it, some money I would have prefered to spend on other things...

How old is ur TV ? Still on warranty ?

@nico where's the old TV? It just seems so unlikely that it's really dead. That just doesn't happen. Wait, what brand? If it's QONIX, then, yeah, you're fcuk'd.

Well, it's all done now, but I would have suggested calling the Manufacturer and starting to complain. It's not like the 2 years are set in stone. Also did you ever google the problem?

Cheers,

Rob

(who got a 40" FullHD samsung for 100 CHF, 'cause it would take a minute to turn in, changed caps for 15 CHF, and now has a perfectly fine 40" FullHD for 115 CHF)

spent quite a bit of time googling it, but no luck. I guess I'll see if I can find a local repair shop to see what they say. Thanks for the suggestions!
