Tax Advisor Needed Quite Urgently

Hello Everyone,


I am looking at renting a house in Canton Obwalden with a view to having that as my permanent residence. I would be there at weekends and stay in temp accomodation in or near to Geneva (possibly France) during the week for work, and I need an advisor who can guide me on how this will affect my tax position.


Obviously I am aware that Obwalden has a very big tax regime to Geneva but I dont know whether I continue to pay all of my tax here or there, or a combination of the 2.


I will move to a C permit in August, so will be needing a tax advisor in any case.


Can anyone point me in the direction of an English-speaking friendly advisor please?

You must have a reason for choosing Obwalden as the differential in tax between Upper and Lower is substantial. Kanton Nidwalden is [I think] the third lowest in Switzerland, whereas Obwalden is certainly not the highest, but certainly not the least expensive. We have friends living in Beckenried which is why we know this. Could you not be lower down the valley perhaps? Just a thought.....

Thanks Sheila, the move is more to do with location than tax and I have found somewhere perfect, but the figures still have to add up. I.e., any additional costs offset by tax savings.

Good luck - it's God's own country up there especially if you are into glorious mountain scenery. Spent many happy hours noticeably along the Benedictusweg of lovely memory.

i am in a similar position between Geneva and Canton Vaud. From experience: You pay your taxes exclusively in the canton of primary residence. The secondary residence is not involved in your taxes. When registering an additional (swiss) residence, you will be asked to justify your choice of primary residence with a "certificat de residence" (easy to get and based on a rental contract). The criteria for primary and secondary residence are somewhat open to interpretation, so chances are you can argue in your favour.


This is only important for the cantonal part of your taxes, the federal taxes are not affected. 


Obviously, i am an not official tax advisor but maybe this helps a bit.
