Tax advice for American citizen

Hello,

I'm just wondering if I work in Switzerland with Permit B and have Swiss income, do I need to also file taxes in the states?

Also, on the flip side if I freelance here in Geneva as an American contractor do I need to declare the earnings with the Swiss government?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Carol, yes to both questions.  Even if your US tax liability is zero you'll still need to file if you have income here.

For the freelancing, I'd be very careful as I doubt that your Swiss residence/work permit authorizes such activity.  You'll want to remain very discreet if you go down this road.

As the others said as a US citizen you will absolutely have to file taxes in the US , but you almost certainly will not have to pay any tax since foreign earned income can be excluded using a the foreign earned income exclusion as long as your income is less then $90K

You can go a bit higher than 90k thanks to the foreign tax credit and a few other odds and ends.  What will definitely trigger tax liabilitxy on the US side is having cap gains or interest income from banking and investment accounts back in the US.
