Tax on gift

Hello!

I have won the gift in a competion, which costs 2000CHF (as I don't need it, I sold the gift for 1100CHF). Now I am wondering if I have to pay taxes for this gift.

Currently I pay tax at source, and I didn't fill any tax declarations by myself.

Please, give me some advices, as I've already read plenty of docs but didn't find anything about it. Especially, nothing concrete related to the tax paying for a gifts in conton Vaud (where I live).

Thanks, a lot for any advice!

Hi,

In the canton of Vaud, you are supposed to announce in a tax return the revenues you obained in lotteries and similar competitions if such revenues are higher than CHF 1'000:

You did not give much details in your message, but subject to some conditions, the persons who are taxed under the system of the tax at source may have to file a tax return (e.g. salary above 120'000 per year, taxable net wealth, acquisition of a real estate - but the conditions vary slightly from one canton to the other). Depending on your personal situation, you should therefore examine if you should file a tax return. Secondly, you may also take into consideration the fact that the gains in a "lottery" are subject to a tax at source (35%, if the gain is higher than CHF 1'000). If you file a tax return and declare the revenue, you may obtain a refund of such tax at source.

Thanks a lot for your reply!

Just I won not a money but the gift. I sold it much cheaper  that it costs(1/2 of its market price), as I don't need it. I am wondering if I should pay the tax for the  money I got from selling it (I don't have any documents about selling it - just I posted an ads on anibish.ch , and that's it), or tax for the market value of the gift...
