Teaching in Switzerland ............. how????

Hi there

I have recently moved here from ireland. I am here with my partner who is working. I am a a qualified and experienced teacher who has a broad spectrum of teaching related experience under her belt!! Over the years i have worked as an art teacher in a second level school but Ialso held administrative roles there like year head, department head, head of overseas school tours. Together with that I have a number of years working with people who have learning difficulties in the area of rehabilitative training both academic and social through the use of horses. Most recently I started a childcare/afterschool care company (at home) which i signed over to my business partner to come here. Over all I have over 12 years experience in the area of education of peope from 4 years old upwards.

I would really really like to start teaching here as i feel i have alot to offer as a teacher. I have applied to international schools but never hear anything back. I am wondering why? Am i doing something wrong ? Any tips or hints would be great. I have also applied for nannying roles but often they seem like there isnt enough work (money) on offer.

thanks again

Hello Rachael,

It's surprising that you haven't received replies with all your qualifications. You didn't mention whether you speak French, which is an asset (but not obligatory).

A lot of schools recruit before the new school year which starts in September. The Tribune de Genève has an employment section on Wednesdays  & occasionally you see adds in that.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll find something

If you are in or near Geneva, you could contact the Geneva Association of Private Schools for a list of their members and other information.

I would also recommend taking an intensive course to polish your French.  It will be a plus on your CV if you show that you have patronized a local educational establishment.

As suggested, look in the “Trib.” for job offers, also other local newspapers if you’re living outside Geneva.

You could also think of giving private English lessons via ads in the Migros, Coop, etc..

In any case, be aware that there are a lot of talented people looking for employment in Geneva, so waiting a little while for a suitable opening is the “norm” right now.

But be patient and persistent and something will come along eventually.

All the best, R.

If you can, sign up for one of the summer courses organized by Uni GE. They are excellent and a very good reference for local empoloyers.

But don’t dally, places go very quickly.

Otherwise, I would recommend IFAGE, also very well regarded locally.

Geneva is a small pond, so the old boys/girls’ network is important

here.

To be a teacher in public schools, you need to undergo a formal training, that lasts 2 years. Inscriptions are made at UniMail, but Im afraid one needs to speak very good French (there's a formal french test to be able to enroll; you just go around this if you have a diploma from University of Geneva).

In your case, best would really be private schools. Problem in Switzerland is that being a school teacher is a highly desired job for lots of people, including many coming from doctoral schools (it's one of the biggest exit doors if one doesnt want to pursue academic career). So, as Ritchie says, competion is high, and vacancies are super few and sparse.

So, dont give up, just keep trying longer!
