I found this article about a team building event in the US where a Sales Manager decided to Waterboard a Sales Rep for ‘motivational purposes’ teling the assembled employees “You saw how hard Chad fought for air right there. I want you to go back inside and fight that hard to make sales!”

Other examples I found was a company that hijacked a coachload of its own employees to see how they’d cope under stress and another getting its employees to walk over hot coals leaving some of them requiring medical attention for burns and in some cases overnight stays in hospital.
It put me in mind of one I attended a few years ago where they had us crawling through extremely narrow tunnels resulting in three people freaking out (not me I hasten to add), one massive shouting match and a couple of threatened resignations.
What have been your experiences of team building events and how positive do you think they are for genuinely fostering a true team spirit afterwards?
