Television via PC
Does anyone get TV via the internet - without a TV card or Hauppage type system?

I have seen a few web sites like this one which sound too good to be true....then again the world is changing fast and it will go this way....

http://www.inklineglobal.com/adsales/rhapsody/tvo_offer_728_2min.html?mcp=CH

I want to use it to listen to the news etc in French to improve my language skills.

If you have an ADSL internet subscription from Sunrise (or switch to Sunrise) they give you Sunrise Desktop TV for free (desktoptv.sunrise.ch). You have all the major channels in Switzerland @ pretty decent quality.

Enjoy.

Another possible option for you. It is a free software you need to download. You can select the country to see which channels they have.

In Switzerland, try http://zattoo.com/. You create an account with them, download a client and you have 50 channels in several languages to choose from, free of charge.

I watch the BBC everyday on it.

Cheers,

Indeed, thanks to everyone who has contributed - I knew it could be done with a PC/TV card nowadays but thanks to the feedback there seems to be burgeoning choice - great.

Can anyone tell me what the quality is like - and do you get subtitles? Please?

I use slingbox but it's not free and it's not exactly like what other people are posting about.  You pay about $100 for the device and you connect it to your cable box.  But that's it.  No monthly fees.  You then set up your computer to talk to that device (super easy) and then you can control that cable box from the computer.  The beautiful thing about it is that you can hook it up to any cable box.  So my hook up is in the US.  And since my cable box has a DVR (digital recording), I can watch my recorded shows from here or I can watch live tv.  You can set up more than one computer per sling box.  The only catch is that you are actually controlling what that cable box is watching.  So if someone is actually physically watching the tv at the same time you are, you would have a conflict.

As for the quality of the picture, it's not great.  But it's good enough to watch my crappy shows.  I wouldn't recommend it for sports, but my hubby is already used to it and he watches ice hockey on it.

And thanks to Andy (who I met thru glocals) for introducing me to slingbox!

Maybe worth to use teletext on TV (code 888 is my memory is good) or DVDs.

I am not so sure that you can find subtitles on an online tv.

James,

I have to admit that I have not tried all of these:blush:. I liked a lot the first link I sent and browsed randomly some other ones. Let me know if one of these is better than the others.

Bluewin is now offering BluewinTV for only 19chf/month, providing 120 channels and live events for 1chf/event and ondemand dvd's for 3.50.  That's a pretty good deal considering the other alternative to see this many channels would be close to 100chf.

And, if you subscribe by May31, you get 3 months free.  There's more on the advert that just came in the mail today.... but it's in german.  i'm sure their website will have more info.

Thanks to moving to geneva, I've managed 18months without TV, and it's actually nice, but on the otherhand, this has now made me get internet at home for first time, and i think this is more deadly!

[quote]Wow!... Happy to read this posting and thread!... I've often wondered about watching TV on my computer; so as to watch real BBC/ITV programs as BBC Prime is quite honestly a load of cr*p

Agree, to an extent... Eastenders is obviously a boon

V happy too to know TV can come through PC... My next TV will be that kind of solution, meanwhile I try to avoid screens of both kinds. And fail fairly  miserably ;)

For those of you interested in watching movies but don't want to download there's a site where you can watch immediately with no registration or fee.

http://www.watch-movies.net

Some movies don't work due to infringement rights but there are a lot that do.

Enjoy :)
