A friend of mine has the same name: I thought it was Unaw though...
I am usually Renat, Renata or Monsieur here. Not easy for Germans abroad either.

I get called Vanilla quite a lot. Very annoying.
My sister get all sorts as well - she's Ciara. Doesn't help that she has a friend whos name is pronouned the same way, but spelled Kiera.
My favourite is my schoolfriend Orflaith, beautiful name. Seriously!

I will put my 5 cents Catalin, Rena is looking for a name, and she will instantly fall in love (with the name) once she googles Mike007 and realises its a short version of Maximus Aurelius Cornelius (= first name), Mc Callaguan on my grand father side and the Mc Cloud clan on the other side(= last name).

Mc Kintoch..
Good one, I resigned Caoimhín to secrecy long time ago....
I have had some interesting times with McCarthy, even an intense conversation with Allianz France as to whether I really needed to have my documents with McCarthy as opposed to their cleaner version of Mcarty, sounded better....I had to restrain myself from asking her I should call her B&$%^ instead of Florine, as it was easier for me...
From my mates actual album over in OZ. His name is Eoin.....

Excellent post Rena! Really made me laugh.
I was going to be called Ciaran ("Keer-rin" if you want the phoenetic version) but my parents changed their mind at the last minute and thought they'd inflict me with Richard which when combined with my surname, was the same as a 1970s British TV star (Robin's Nest and Man About the House). After this I was destined me to spend the 80s saying, "No, I'm not the actor..."
On the subject of Irish surnames, it's always fun watching booking systems crash when you enter your exact name including the apostrophe after the O.
My only consulation is I don't have my mate's name from college; Conor or Con to his friends. Which I would imagine would be interesting for him if he lived in a French speaking country!

The difficulty of spelling names is not just limited to Irish names... even Charlie gets spelled wrong everywhere;
Charlie
Charli
Charly
Charley
My Grandmothers Irish name was "Ellaline Mary Le Poer Power"
(the last 3 words being the family name.)

I totally agree:
for me as an Italian living here and try to make people understand my real name is a challenge, and when the get it they are not able to pronounce it correctly
these are the variations of my name (Niccolò)
Nicolas, Nicolà (France)
Nico-WHAT? (France and Greece)
Nicolaus (Germany and others german speaking countries)
I had lived in the UK for 2 months and of course even there was impossible to make them understand my name, 99,9% of the time it was something between Nicoloh and Nicole
after a while I got tired of misspelling and so I decided to make it easier to everybody and to change it temporarily into Nick. Is not the same of course and sometimes I miss my real name but I think that living as an expat and expecting people with a different culture, language and birth names to understand and articulate correctly your name (a word from a different language) is wrong in a certain way pretentious.
by the way sometimes is funny to see how people react to all these non-conventional names :)
