The Local: "Seat Squatters on Swiss Trains Will face Fines"

"SBB's new policy coincides with the launch of new timetables on December 11th. From that date, conductors will issue on-the-spot fines, in the form of additional tickets, to passengers who refuse to remove their belongings from seats they have not paid for on busy trains.

“Reticent passengers will have to pay for an extra ticket,” SBB spokesman Reto Kormann told newspaper 20 Minuten. “Otherwise, they will be kicked off the train,” he added.

Passengers will be made aware of the new rules through loudspeaker announcements. But Kormann said he did not believe many people would incur the fines, since most passengers do make room for others when there are no seats left...."

And how about a fine for them putting their feet up on the seats opposite and refusing to take them down when patrons are looking for seating?

I usually find that people move if asked.  On buses I often make a point of taking the seat next to somebody who has to move over.

Then I usually have to get up aain when they alight at the next stop - serves me right forbeing an awkward b....

This is not a Swiss problem

I never felt that people would refuse to let someone sit down if asked. Often people and myself included put stuff on seats to block them, but ive never seen anyone refusing to let someone sit down, even when there were other seats available.

I feel there are other issues that need to be addresed instead, like some antisocial behaviour of some people on public transport or people who make too much commotion.

A much more useful thing to see on trains that travel longer than half an hour would be to have every second part of the train a quiet zone and some strict punishments for neglecting it. When I am travelling somewhere for a few hours and alone I really dont want to listen to some loud conversations, screams or phonecalls.

True. Some people here know how to use "etiquette" only at their workplace maybe.

Not so often, but remember seeing young man seating while pregnant woman near standing or refused to move (just to move!) to get free place for smb with crutches...
