I spoke with Laurent last night. He is very concerned about entering The Village with the right spirit.
I tried to help him by encouraging him to dress like the Natives: animal skins, bone in the nose, brutal tattoos in the most painful areas. Some of these things are available in the Pacquis, so he should be alright.
But appearances are only one part of being with the Indigenes of The Village.
He is also having niggling worries about the initiation rights. As he is already circumcised (so he says), he wonders what further horrors could possibly await him.
He is ready to pass:
the Howling Test
the Drink MUCH Fire Water test
the Sleep Where You Fall test
the Dance Around Then Thru the Fire Test.
the Squat for Hours Test.
He's been practicing on the tamtam and walked barefoot on the Geneva streets for some weeks now for that authentic native foot look. His dentist is concerned about his recent lack of hygiene but he's been more than willing to sacrifice a bit of personal pride to be part of The Village.
But now a deep fear is penetrating his bowels. No it's not a bad curry. He does not know if he is ready to enter that Sacred Circle. Is he truly worthy?
How else could he possibly prepare for this milestone in his life, when a run-of-the-mill GoLer becomes a Brother, A Villager, One of the Chosen.
Please send Laurent some forewarning of what lies ahead.
