I assume you mean cinemas, not renting a movie and watching at home.

Pathe has 3 cinemas in Geneva, and there are several independent ones. Independent ones are typically cheaper, but the difference isn't big. Some independent cinemas have quite bad seats (but I'm quite tall so I'm biased). Pathe attracts a lot of teenagers for certain movies which can be annoying. Both Pathe and independents show English/original as well as French versions, so make sure you see the one you prefer.

http://www.cine.ch/home.php has all movie info (but the site is annoying)

eek! "best" and "cheap" are not often in the same sentence, let alone the same breath.

Sadly, movies here are expensive. The big chain is Pathé (www.pathe.ch) and prices run about 18.00 CHF for an adult. They have the Pathe Friends which lets you get tickets for only 15 CHF and also Pass Pathé which is 37 CHF/month (sign up for a year) for unlimited movies.

There is also a network of independent cinemas which have some great non-mainstream movies and they are cheaper, around 15 CHF, I think.

They also have a CinéPass card which costs 30 CHF (20 for students) for 12 months. This card entitles the holder to tickets for any movie at 10 CHF.

Finally, there is the Astor Film Lounge. This is probably the "best" place to see a movie in Genèva, in the sense that it's a small (cozy) cinema, very comfortable seats, a free apéritif and other luxurious niceties. But, it comes at a price, of course. Afternoon showings are 18 CHF, evening showings are 24 CHF. But, I have to say, it's worth doing once, just for the one-time splurge factor.

My experience with Astor Film Lounge was overwhelmingly negative. The reclining chairs are really uncomfortable for someone my size. And they only served drinks before the movie, not during. We didn't know this, so we ended up without drinks the whole movie (no break).

i went to watch Hugo 3D and they *stopped* the movie in the middle to serve more drinks/snacks.

but the chairs and so on were quite nice. we sat in a row with extra leg room - maybe that made a difference?

No the leg space is fine. The problem is that the seats are pre-shaped, so either my head comes above the headrest (which is painful when your leaning backwards, or my head is on the headrest but my lower back is unsupported (because it's at the place where my arse is supposed to be).

I'm not even extremely tall; 1m96 (6'6").

Much less annoying site (it restricts you to Pathe but I've never found that "restricting")

http://www.pathe.ch/cinema/lausanne/

We have a "Orange" film night at the cinema on Tuesdays (2 for the price of one, already pointed out) which is always great fun.  I don't think there's a Geneva group, so maybe you should start one.  Have a look under things I've organised and feel free to plagiarise.

So Happy Easter! (also slightly less annoying than "holiday")

PS:  You don't need to have an Orange phone - just know somone who has and get them to text you their code.  You can "collect" as many codes as you wish and share them amongst non-Orange friends.  I'm sure it's not how its supposed to work - but the kids on the cinema's front desk don't seem to care!

Pathe cinema in Balexert - best all rounder

Avoid some screens at the Rialto has you can get seats where the view is partially obscured by pillars

As prices are generally too expensive - just wait a few weeks for DVD release

If you are really impatient and a cheapskate the internet is your friend

Pathe Balexert for me. I also love their popcorn, althought the price is daylight robbery (the case everywhere with movie popcorn)

Thank you !

Titanic is something I have to watch in the cinema. DVD is a nice idea, but not helpful about Titanic.

So...I think I have to face the fact that cinema here is expensive. :(
