The uses and benefit of spices in the Indian kitchen...

A couple of months ago, I had organized an Indian cooking session at my place where I also explained the various medicinal benefits of the spices used in the Indian kitchen.


Here is a list of a few spices and their benefits.


Hope this will be useful to at least a few of you..

Asafoetida


A good remedy for whooping cough and stomach ache caused due to gas. 


Garlic


An effective fat-burning food, garlic contains the sulphur compound allicin, which has anti-bacterial effects and helps reduce cholesterol and unhealthy fats.  It is useful for coping with cough and cold. It also has antibiotic properties 


Cinnamon and cloves
The spices have been found to improve the function of insulin and to lower glucose, total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides in people with type 2 diabetes. Clove oil is beneficial for coping with tooth ache and sore gums. It is also beneficial remedy for chest pains, fever, digestive problems, cough and cold.


Cardamom
This is a thermogenic herb that increases metabolism and helps burn body fat. Cardamom is considered one of the best digestive aids. It also helps to control bad breath. A whole cardamom chewed is good for coping with diabetes.


Chillies
Chillies contain capsaicin that helps in increasing the metabolism. Capsaicin is a thermogenic food, so it causes the body to burn calories for 20 minutes after you eat the chillies.


Coriander
It can be used externally on aching joints and rheumatism. It is also good for coping with soar throat, allergies, digestion problems, hay fever etc.


Cumin
It is a good source or iron and keeps immune system healthy. Water boiled with cumin seeds is good for coping with dysentery


Ginger


 


Helps to avoid digestive problems. It is beneficial for coping with cough and cold. 


Mustard
Mustard oil is good for body massage and even for getting good hair. It consists of omega-3 fatty acids. It is an excellent source of iron, zinc, manganese, calcium, protein etc


Nutmeg
It is beneficial for the treatments of asthma, heart disorder and bad breath


Black Pepper
It helps coping with cold, cough, infections etc. It helps to deal with muscle pains and digestive problems


Turmeric
Its regular intake may help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high BP, increase blood circulation and prevent blood clotting, helping to prevent heart attack. Turmeric is also used as antiseptic as it can heal wounds and cuts. Its also helps to cure skin problems. Turmeric mixed with rose water makes a good facepack…
