Then and Now

I find old laws, customs, practises fascinating. Although we may find them archaic today (and some of them hilarious), its always interesting to know where they come from:

ps: to all Americans out there, I apologise for the title, it is not mine:

As I understand it, it is still legal for pregnant women to pee in the streets in the UK, also legal to heard your goats through central London...

There are quite a few medieval laws which still exist.

Killing a "Swan" in the UK amounts to "treason against the crown"...a crime punishable by death (beheading) still....

Aren't you also still allowed, or even expected to shoot a welshman who happens to be in the town square in Heresford on a Sunday, with a longbow?

The killing of a welshman is true.

Hackney carriages (london black cabs) have to carry a bail of hay for the horse!

Apparently, and this may be an urban legend, but the word F.U.C.K is an anagram of an old police form to prosecute whores and it stands for "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge"
