Your suggesitons will really be useful-

2) Any suggestions where to bu the below from? and how much should it cost approx?

a) Iron + ironing board

2) Cutlery + plates - set of 6

thanks, your help will be appreciated

If you have transport, try looking on Ricardo.ch - there is a section in French - where you can buy household goods at rock bottom prices. It's a little like eBay where you have to bid. Good luck

Good quality second hand stuff. In Carouge - highly recommend it.

People are also always selling things on Glocals.

Do you really mean  DUVET. As in the thing that covers your bed??
250-500 chf.. Is that not a mattress for that price??

Since it's summer (yeah really) a light weight duvet should suffice. Example 9.95chf at ikea

http://www.ikea.com/ch/fr/catalog/products/10131425/

In fact just get everything at ikea  :)

A cheap duvet is a poor buy --  it won’t survive any form of cleaning.  Go for a two-layer all-seasons model – use one layer for cool nights in early autumn before the heating comes on and both layers when the bise blows its best as it always does for “Escalade”.

You can find some excellent bargains when the sales start in a few weeks’ time.  “Manor” is probably the best option if you want to shop in town.

Otherwise, keep a lookout for factory outlet and  closing-down (“liquidation”) ads.

The charity shops can also have good buys in cutlery and other table and kitchen wares, but you need to visit them regularly.

Otherwise, IKEA as mentioned elsewhere, but you pays your money …

All the best, R.

Hey guys, Thanks a lot!

I got some more suggestions from other social groups in Geneva and I am summarising responses which I found useful so that someone else who joins this group can find the below useful:

For duvet, most people suggested Manor for good quality (I went there myself to check it out and they told me they have a sale starting in end June / early July so suggested I wait for 2-3 weeks)

Many people said Ikea is the next best option after Manor

Conforma – some people suggested 60-70chf but added that quality is not as good as Ikea and Manor but not bad if the budget is tight.

One suggestion was Migro.

Someone suggested - http://www.ikea.com/ch/fr/catalog/products/10131425/ Not sure about the quality but I surely will check that out in Ikea.

I think I will go for Manor and wait for the sale starting in 2 weeks.....else Ikea

Cutlery:

I was suggested Ikea, Casa or even Migros for cutlery.

Someone said Coop has some 70% off on cutlery.

Some suggested Emmaus in Caraouge for second hand beds sofa etc (I am not looking for these iteams – but just incase it helps you)

Another suggestion (second hand) was www.csp.ch

I think i will go for Co-op / Migros (I checked Ikea quality - it was not good at all)

Iron and Ironingg board

I was suggested to go to Migro / Interdiscount and Fust

a)Iron Board : IKEA around 35 - 50 bucks + cover :35 CHF

b) Iron : Interdiscount : 50-300 bucks (Confused here)

Hope that helps

The CHF 300 iron is probably one of those fancy steam contraptions that need a spare room to house them.

You can get a perfectly serviceable iron from Migros or Coop for ca CHF 50, cheap enough to replace if it gives up after a couple of years.

If you can, wait for the upcoming sales.  Apart from marked-down items, there will also be special offers on regular lines.

The sales are very good here but always ask if the item comes with a guarantee and if so make sure you collect it when you pay.  Then keep till receipt and guarantee in a safe place.

Happy shopping!

I bought a basic iron from Migros for 20 fr and an ironing board that I'm happy with from Ikea for about 50.  Ikea also had one for 15fr but it is small and rickety.  I bring bedding over from the UK as its so much cheaper but a friend brought a duvet in Spar in Chamonix while we were skiing as it was still much cheaper than CH.

With the Ikea duvets  youre almost obliged to buy the bedding there too, due to the sizing of their duvets being different from the standard duvets sold in other shops ... if youre fine with that then its prob best value.. again go for the all seasons one, or the one where you have two duvets that clip together, and can strip one out in the summer when its cooking hot (if it ever gets like that here this year).

France (carrefour) is good for ironing boards etc

Cutlery / Plates... defo Ikea for the moment... perfectly usable as a every day set.
